View Full Version : Hard time watching sad animal stories
Janice 11-20-2002, 10:29 PM Who else is this way? I love animals so much, and I just cannot watch or read anything about something bad happening to them. I grab the remote and change the channel. If we're watching the news and they do a sound bite about an upcoming story on a barn fire or something like that, my husband knows to change the channel.
This oil spill is killing so many animals, but I haven't read one thing about it. If someone posts something on this board, I won't open it.
I can't even watch the animal rescue shows on tv--can't stand to see them in distress even if I know they're going be rescued.
Terrible human stories bother me greatly too, but I can watch most of them, except the bad ones about kids.
DarleneIllyria 11-20-2002, 11:21 PM I feel the same way, Janice. I can't stand to watch it on the tv and the rare times that I read about animal abuse or animals suffering it always makes me cry.
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 11-20-2002, 11:25 PM :( Ditto. I know like DSC channel is nature.. but I dont live in Africa, therefor I shouldnt have to see it! I cant even watch movies, even though I know its fake. I almost cried in Homeward Bound (1 or 2?) when the golden retriever got stuck in that mudhole. I refuse to watch that movie..what is it..Rin Tin Tin? No..that movie..I guess they shoot it @ the end. I refuse to watch it. I got all upset during Fox & The Hound. And Lion King. The one movie Ive seen twice that I wont watch ever again is The Bear. OMG..is that NOT the saddest movie youve ever seen?!?!
ABlairican Pie 11-20-2002, 11:26 PM That's why I hate oil spills. AND Michael Jackalson.
Georgia's on my Mind 11-20-2002, 11:39 PM I never understood why everyone feels so bad for animals, I personally think it's all well and good...But shouldn't peoples time be more well spent concentrating more time on people's safety. i dunno, just my opinion.

Animals are defenseless creatures. Caring about their well-being or feeling sad for the suffering of animals in no way takes away from feeling compassion for your fellow man. You can care about both.
This thread just happens to be about animals.

Not for me. I have way more sympathy for animals than I do people. When I hear someone died on the news, its sad..but when I hear an animal dies..I cant even watch it. I hate it when people (I have a friend like this) who always makes cruel animal jokes. Argh. I also get so friggan pissed about roadkill. Ya..it can be impossible to avoid.. but most people just dont give a ****. :( Its really sad seeing a dead cat or dog..:crying:
Jimbo 11-21-2002, 09:03 PM Janlady, I completely agree with you on this subject. I've always been an animal lover, and cannot stand to see them injured or mistreated in any way.
In addition to not wanting to see that sort of thing on TV or the movies, I also cannot deal with some of the letters sent out by various charities devoted to animal care and safety. I donate money to a couple of these types of charities. As I result, I've gotten on all kinds of mailing lists. Some of the descriptions included in these solicitations are pretty graphic. I can do without that - just tell me about the work the organization does, and I'll make a decision from there.
We had one heck of a flood in our area a few years ago. It went on for several days. Cattle, dogs cats, horses and so on were either stranded on roof tops or swept up in the current, swimming for their lives. Some were rescued, and those rescues were some of the biggest and most heart-warming stories out of the whole herrendous event. People are touched by the plight of animals. I believe it actually helps us to put our own troubles into perspective.
ABlairican Pie 11-21-2002, 10:50 PM One thing I was really disgusted by were some flyers put out by PETA or some animal rights group that said Bank of America was funding animal abuse. I found the flyers by an ATM in downtown Seattle last year, and the pictures made me ill. I am not sure how to describe it, just that it involved the brutalization of beagles, and I was so mad I trashed the entire bunch. It may be
bad enough that a corporation MAY be involved in this practice,
BUT DO WE NEED TO SEE THESE LURID, MORBID PICTURES AT PUBLIC ATMS WHERE SENSITIVE VIEWERS, WOMEN AND CHILDREN CAN SEE THEM???

I agree 2000%. I don't even try to watch animal shows anymore because I love them too much to live with the images. The way we treat animals is a clear indicator of how we treat the defenseless among ourselves, usually the very young or very old... this has been proven time and time again with extensive research. Serial killers usually begin by killing animals, it's been linked to most adult violence including domestic. Just do a quick search on the internet if you don't believe that there is a link. I think being kind to animals is the result of a very important life decision and lesson - do you take advantage of those that cannot speak simply because you can or do you defend them against those who would.
Everyone has their own causes and passions, some more extreme than others (I also support Alzheimers and MS causes). None are right or wrong because they are based upon personal beliefs. Putting graphic literature in public places is done for shock value, anti-abortionists do the same thing. I don't like it either but if it changes the mind of one person - mission accomplished.
Crimson and Clover 11-22-2002, 03:23 PM i dont like seeing animals or people hurt. i hate oil spills too i hate how people hunt for fun, killing defensless animals to show off to their stupid friends.
InspectorExstead 11-22-2002, 11:30 PM i hate animal abuse! they don't need to be. it just makes me so mad and sad when i hear stories of abuse. they don't need to suffer!! :(

Let's make it really sporting: how about one-on-one hand-to-hand combat between a man and a WOLVERINE????
No guns, no knives, just hands, claws and paws.
Jordan 11-23-2002, 03:57 PM I know how you feel -- I can never watch sad animal stories because then I think of my baby puppies and hope that that never happens to them. It gets tooooooo emotional for me.
Montana Ponine 11-23-2002, 05:39 PM OMG..when I watched Air Bud I cried at the part where the boy leaves the dog...I was like awwww...but that's not what you mean.
Animal abuse is so wrong. I think that for the most part animals should be treated as humans. What makes people think they're so much better than animals?? Seriously.
britt britt 11-23-2002, 06:12 PM i feel the same way about animals. i love them soo much. i hate seeing them hurt. my mom used to have a dog that was abused before they took it home. she said it would always hang around where my grandfather worked and he took it home one night then the owners came looking for it. so they did that thing where you call the dogs name and see which person it comes to and he came to my moms family. i was like aww.I love animals. oh and i cried in air bud too when he left the dog.

I hope no one puts animals and humans on the same level because as human beings, we are gifted with intelligence and compassion, language and creativity, etc., things which make us uniquely human as opposed to animals. Of course we are entrusted with the gift of compassion and the responsibility to take care of God's creatures and his creation.

We're all God's creatures. Humans possess qualities that animals don't and vice versa. Animals have the capacity to love unconditionally, to forgive easily, and to enjoy the simplest joys in life. I can name people like that on maybe two hands.
Animals, like humans, have feelings. They can feel sad, happy, neglected, even depressed. Animals are devoted and loyal and do have a language all their own.
They feel physical pain the same as humans. Put a match to a hand or a paw, and the result is the same.
To be honest, I wouldn't put a lot of humans on the same level of animals because the humans don't measure up.
Chocoholic 11-23-2002, 09:13 PM I can't bear hearing about children and animals being abused. They are so innocent and defenseless. I think anyone who intentionally harms a child or an animal deserves severe punishment.

This thread just happens to be about animals.Well HUMANS are animals also and they are scum but all other animals yes are goregous/defenseless creatures and it breaks my heart as it looks like Janice feels the same way I do.......
I saw a PETA video once and I had a very hard time watching it.... I cant believe they can do that to those cows and not care
The only animal species I dont care about are HUMANS and thats because they have been so mean to me thru my life..... From my mom to my friends father,etc.........
