i just read that originally, the creators of the show had their "ideal" ending for the show. Originally Diane still came back in the finale, only for her and Sam to admit that they can't live with or without each other, and take each other's life in a murder-suicide.
a little darker than what really happened, huh? lol
also, the show, as u may know from some TV specials, was based on James Burrows' dad's 1940's radio show, Duffy's Tavern, but also was inspired by a Britcom "Fawlty Towers", which starred John Cleese, which was about a British seaside hotel run by an incompetent staff.
