A rare cancer claims the 1970s pinup beauty. First known for her looks and hairstyle, she captivated critics with 'Burning Bed' and other serious roles. Later, she chronicled her illness.

Link (http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-farrah-fawcett26-2009jun26,0,2998799,full.story)

Farrah Fawcett, who soared to fame as a national sex symbol in the late 1970s on television's campy "Charlie's Angels" and in a swimsuit poster that showcased her feathery mane and made her a generation's favorite pinup, died today. She was 62.

Fawcett, whose celebrity overshadowed her ability as a serious actress, was diagnosed with a rare anal cancer in 2006, died about 9:30 a.m. at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica, said Paul Bloch, her publicist.

Three months after she was declared cancer-free in 2007, doctors at UCLA Medical Center told her the cancer had returned, spreading to her liver, and she repeatedly sought experimental treatment in Germany.

As an actress, Fawcett was initially dismissed for her role as Jill Munroe in "Charlie's Angels," one of the "jiggle" series on ABC-TV in the late 1970s.

But she transformed her career and some popular perceptions in 1984 with "The Burning Bed," a television movie about a battered wife that brought her the first of three Emmy nominations. She further established herself as an actress in the play and later feature film "Extremities," about a rape victim who takes revenge on her attacker.

For many, the poster of her wearing a wet one-piece swimsuit and a blinding smile endured.

"If you were to list 10 images that are evocative of American pop culture, Farrah Fawcett would be one of them," Robert Thompson, a professor of television and popular culture at Syracuse University, told The Times. "That poster became one of the defining images of the 1970s."

Yet Fawcett was part of a new generation of celebrities whose fame was fueled by heightened coverage of their ongoing personal dramas, Thompson said.

She had many: a failed marriage to actor Lee Majors; a stormy, long-term relationship with actor Ryan O'Neal; a son who fought drug addiction; a writer-director boyfriend, James Orr, who was convicted of assaulting her; a Playboy video that featured her using her naked body as a paintbrush; and a spacey 1997 appearance on David Letterman's late-night TV show that caused critics to question her mental state.

For her part, Fawcett once said all she had to do to get on the cover of People was to "have a new boyfriend or even a new dog," Texas Monthly reported in 1997.

At first, her mane nearly eclipsed her fame.

"Charlie's Angels" showcased the long, feathered tresses that framed her face, launching a national fad of copycat haircuts. Many Fawcettphiles believed the hair had as much to do with the poster's sales as anything, The Times reported in 1977.

Within six months, the poster sold five million copies, outstripping the records of such previous sex symbols as Betty Grable and Marilyn Monroe. It wound up selling a reported 12 million copies.

"You were a real man if you had her poster. She was our pinup girl," Mike O'Meara, a radio show host who was in high school when it came out, told the Baltimore Sun in 2006.

Fawcett quit the series that brought her initial fame in 1977 after a single season, saying producers were preventing her from growing as an actress. With Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith, Fawcett had played a private investigator whose main talent seemed to be the ability to wield a gun while going braless and shouting, "Freeze, turkey!"

"Charlie's Angels" was so popular that 59% of the television audience tuned in, according to Time magazine, and the Los Angeles Times' review of the series premiere pointed out why: The show dripped with "sexuality" and "good-natured but quite intentional teasing."

Along with "Three's Company" -- a double-entendre-filled ABC sitcom that debuted six months after "Charlie's Angels" in fall 1976 -- the show is credited with helping to launch television's "jiggle" era. Still, the show was seen as empowering women, even if they did take their orders from an unseen male boss named Charlie.

"In an odd way, even with all that Lycra and bralessness, the show was a feminist statement," Thompson said. "This was an hourlong drama with women as action heroes. They were working in areas of power that generally we didn't see women in much."

Fawcett, who had appeared in shampoo ads, would triumph over critics who dismissed "Charlie's Angels" as little more than a commercial for hair products. But first she appeared in two lightweight feature films: "Somebody Killed Her Husband" (1978) and "Sunburn" (1979).

She surprised critics with her intense portrayal of the battered wife who immolates her husband in the TV movie "The Burning Bed." The 1984 Times review noted her "growing acting skill" and "deeply moving performance."

The phrase "Burning Bed" entered Hollywood's lexicon as shorthand for actresses who wanted to be taken seriously. "Managers would call and say, 'She'd like to do her 'Burning Bed,' " Robert Greenwald, the film's director, told The Times in 1999.

The off-Broadway play "Extremities" provided another dramatically taxing showcase in 1983. Following Susan Sarandon in the starring role, Fawcett broke her wrist during a fight scene and lost weight because the part was so physically demanding. She also earned respectable reviews.

When the film of "Extremities" followed in 1986, The Times' Charles Champlin called her performance "further declaration of her arrival as a serious and intelligent actress who happens to be beautiful."

Robert Duvall cast Fawcett as his wife in his 1997 independent film "The Apostle," about a Texas Pentecostal preacher who escapes to Louisiana after accidentally killing his wife's lover. Again, she won praise.

"That woman's work has been very underrated," Duvall told Texas Monthly, citing her Emmy-nominated performance in "Small Sacrifices," a 1989 TV movie in which her character kills her children. "That woman knows how to act."

With O'Neal, with whom she had a son, she starred in "Good Sports," a short-lived 1991 CBS sitcom that was her last network television series. She received her final Emmy nomination in 2003 for guest-starring on "The Guardian" on CBS.

Farrah Leni Fawcett was born Feb. 2, 1947, in Corpus Christi, Texas, to James Fawcett, who founded a pipeline construction company, and his wife, Pauline. Her older sister, Diane, died of lung cancer in 2001.

While studying painting and sculpture at the University of Texas at Austin, Fawcett was used to being judged by her looks. College men lined up to meet the freshman at her sorority in 1965, her college boyfriend told Texas Monthly. After she was voted one of the 10 most beautiful women on campus, a Hollywood publicist came calling.

Her parents wanted her to finish college before coming west, but they gave in after her junior year. Within two weeks of arriving, Fawcett had an agent and a significant other -- Majors, who had arranged an introduction after seeing her photograph, she often said.

She signed a contract with Screen Gems, Columbia's television subsidiary, and got bit parts on shows such as "The Flying Nun" and " The Partridge Family."

Majors married Fawcett in 1973 and became "The Six Million Dollar Man" on ABC a year later. She sometimes appeared on the series.

Her contract for "Charlie's Angels" stipulated that she had to be home every night by 6:30 to make Majors' dinner at their Bel-Air home, but the domesticity didn't last. While on location in 1979, Majors arranged for his dashing buddy O'Neal to look in on Fawcett. By fall, she had moved into O'Neal's Malibu beachfront home, Time magazine reported in 1997.

They stayed together for 17 tumultuous years but never married, although O'Neal said this week that the seriously ill Fawcett had said yes to his latest marriage proposal. "As chaotic and crazy as their relationship is, I don't know who could put up with the two of them better than each other," her friend Alana Stewart said in the Time article.

In 1985, Fawcett and O'Neal became the parents of a son, Redmond, whose teenage exploits were tabloid staples. From age 13, he had been in and out of drug treatment programs and has admitted abusing heroin, the London Daily Express reported in 2007. He has had several drug-related arrests in the last year.

Redmond, now 24, was allowed to temporarily leave jail April 25 to visit his mother at her home. In April, he was arrested on charges of trying to smuggle drugs into a jail facility in Castaic and recently was admitted to a court-ordered rehabilitation program.

When Fawcett and O'Neal broke up in 1997 -- she attributed it to conflicts over parenting -- it was the beginning of a troubled time for her.

First, another actress accused her of stealing $72,000 worth of clothes. Then Fawcett appeared on Letterman's show to promote the video that showed her hurling her gold-painted naked body against a canvas. Chatting with the host, she looked disoriented and sounded incoherent. She repeatedly claimed it had been an act.

Orr, a sometime boyfriend, was convicted of slamming Fawcett's head to the ground and choking her during a fight. She admitted smashing windows at his Bel-Air mansion with a baseball bat. The couple got back together but broke up for good before he was sentenced to three years' probation, The Times reported in 1999.

For years, Fawcett lived in the Bel-Air home she bought with Majors in 1976; it was sold for $2.7 million in 1999. More recently, she called a Beverly Hills condo home.

Fawcett's relationship with O'Neal was on-again, off-again after their breakup. She helped nurse him back to health after he was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia in 2001; and he was there for her soon after she was diagnosed with anal cancer.

Two breast cancer survivors also rallied to her side: Smith and Jackson, her "Charlie's Angels" costars.

When tabloids quickly reported her cancer recurrence in 2007, Fawcett suspected that details of her medical care were being leaked. Her complaints led UCLA Medical Center to dismiss an employee who had surreptitiously reviewed Fawcett's medical records and those of more than 30 other high-profile patients. A new state law aimed at protecting patient privacy also grew out of the records violations

Forced to battle her cancer publicly, Fawcett made "Farrah's Story," a video diary that unsparingly chronicled her struggle to fight the disease and efforts to protect her privacy. It aired on NBC in mid-May.

Throughout the documentary, O'Neal is a steady presence. In May, O'Neal told People magazine: "I won't know this world without her."

In addition to her son, Fawcett is survived by her father.

TV Land Airs Chasing Farrah on Saturday, June 27 from 9-10PM:

TV LAND CELEBRATES THE LIFE OF HOLLYWOOD ACTRESS AND

POP ICON FARRAH FAWCETT

New York, NY, June 25, 2009 – TV Land will honor the memory of Hollywood actress and pop culture icon Farrah Fawcett with a tribute presentation with the first two episodes of the 2005 TV Land original series, “Chasing Farrah,” which chronicled her daily life as one of the most recognized stars in the history of celebrity, on Saturday, June 27 from 9pm – 10pm ET/PT. Fawcett passed away in Santa Monica, California this morning from cancer at the age of 62. The series gave viewers a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the actress and her travels, both in and out of the spotlight.

“Farrah Fawcett was much more than a Hollywood icon, but a friend and colleague,” explains Larry W. Jones, president, TV Land. “We are honored to have known her and worked with her and will remember her fondly. Our hearts go out to Farrah’s entire family.”

The tribute presentation of “Chasing Farrah” celebrates Farrah as she went to the U.S. Open in New York, relaxed with her close friend Alana Stewart and shared dinner with Ryan O’Neal – the love of her life – at his beach house.

TVLand.com will feature a Memorial Spot – which will also run on-air – and Obituary.

Born on February 2, 1947 in Corpus Christi, Texas Farrah Fawcett always stole the spotlight with her beauty and spirit. While attending the University of Texas, she caught the eye of a celebrity publicist who convinced her to pursue her dream of acting in Los Angeles. She left Texas for the City of Angels and the rest is history. Her television career gained steam throughout the 1960s when she appeared on well-known shows such as “I Dream of Jeannie,” “The Flying Nun” and “The Partridge Family” but it was the role of private eye “Jill Monroe” in the TV series, “Charlie’s Angels” that garnered her world-wide fame and iconic status. Her growing popularity could not be denied when, during the first season, she posed in a red bathing suit for a poster that to this day has sold over 12 million copies worldwide. Fawcett left “Charlie’s Angels” after just one season but continued a successful acting career including Emmy-nominated performances in “The Burning Bed,” “Small Sacrifices,” “The Guardian” and “Extremities” and in the acclaimed film, “The Apostle.”

Any of us who watched her documentary heard the doctors say what they did about her time left. Still, its a difficult loss to swallow...2009 has been a really tough year on lost celebrities and Farrah is no exception. Sure we all knew her from being an Angel, but for me, I think one of the most interesting scenes she ever did on film was in the Apostle.

In the scene Sonny's character (the Apostle E.F.) goes to Farrah's character (his former wife) asking her to pray with him. Her response to his request is one that will live on for me when I think of Farrah...not only was her response both physical and verbal (in the film) but it painted the picture of strength. Farrah was obviously like that in life. A strong willed lady who battled her cancer in a way anyone could easily respect.

I was thinking after reading that Ryan would be on 20/20 and talk about her and the possibility of marriage how grand it would have been. Sadly she didn't stay here long enough for that to happen but if some reports I've read have it correctly, he said that he spent her last hours telling her how much he loved her.

You can add in my sentiments to that too...we love you Farrah and we'll miss you...

Lee Majors Reacts to Farrah's Death

After the news of Farrah Fawcett's death, fans around the world are expressing their grief over losing the actress to cancer. And now her ex-husband, actor Lee Majors, is adding his voice to the others mourning her passing at age 62.

"My wife Faith and I were saddened to hear of Farrah's passing," Lee tells Entertainment Tonight. "She fought a tremendous battle against a terrible disease. She was an angel on earth and now an angel forever."

Farrah and Lee were married in 1972, before separating in 1979. They were formally divorced in 1982, and Farrah went on to become involved with the love of her life, Ryan O'Neal.

'Angels' Speak on Fawcett's Passing

Jaclyn Smith and Kate Jackson, who co-starred with Farrah Fawcett in "Charlie's Angels," and Cheryl Ladd, who replaced Farrah on the show, have released statements regarding the actress' death this morning.

Jaclyn said, "Farrah had courage, she had strength, and she had faith. And now she has peace as she rests with the real angels."

"I will miss Farrah everyday. She was a selfless person who loved her family and friends with all her heart, and what a big heart it was," Kate said in a statement. "Farrah showed immense courage and grace throughout her illness and was an inspiration to those around her. When I think of Farrah I will remember her kindness, her cutting dry wit and of course her beautiful smile. Today when you think of Farrah remember her smiling because that is exactly how she wanted to be remembered...smiling."

"I'm terribly sad about Farrah's passing," Cheryl said. "She was incredibly brave, and God will be welcoming her with open arms."

John Forsythe, who voiced Charlie in "Charlie's Angels," released this statement regarding Fawcett: "Though I did not know her well, Farrah left an indelible mark on me and the public during her one year reign on "Charlie's Angels." She put up a gallant fight and I send my deepest sympathy and prayers to her family and friends."

Actor George Hamilton -- the ex-husband of Farrah's close friend Alana Stewart -- also released a statement to "Extra" regarding the "Angel's" death. It reads: "She was the strongest woman I ever met, who fought this battle for 3 years to the end. She never felt sorry for herself and was the sweetest and kindest lady. I will miss her enormously."

It's hard to imagine anyone ever again having the incredible splash like Farrah did in the 70's. And it's doubly impressive when you consider she was only on CA for one season, plus I believe six other episodes due to a contract settlement. She was sexy, yes, but there was an innocent quality to her beauty that I don't think alienated women as many sex symbols do. Jill Munroe wasn't a bimbo; she was funny, resourceful and very intelligent.

RIP Farrah. I agree with those who have said you showed true dignity and class in your struggle against this terrible disease. You did not "go gently into that good night." :rip:

I remember first seeing Farrah in a couple of "Noxema" commercial with Joe Namath. No one knew who she was at the time, all we knew was that she was pretty hot... here's the commerical with Namath

Youtube Farrah commerical w/Joe Namath (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OM59nSkjEWU)

There was another commercial she did around the same time, but I didn't see that one posted on youtube.

EDIT: Woah, I just found this appearance by Farrah on "The Dating Game" - 1969 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEuIlXVtbys)

Farrah was also in the theatrical version of "Logan's Run" with Michael York.

I enjoyed "Somebody Killed Her Husband", one of her first films after CA. "Saturn 3", well, the less said the better but it wasn't her fault. She really had a nice range, able to do light comedy and heavy drama also ("Burning Bed", "The Apostle", "Murder in Texas", etc.).

I'm also old enough to remember when just about every girl in America tried to copy her trademark 70's hairstyle. ;)

Very sad news. From what I have been reading and hearing about what was going on it was only a matter of time. I hope that whoever got the story first is real proud.

I was looking at her IMDB resume and I didn't realize how many television movies she had done. Why did she decide to stick with tv-movies for so long? Was it her decision or she just couldn't get the break from Hollywood?

I saw that she made a few theatrical releases such as Chevy Chase's Man of the House. I forgot that she appeared in that as JTT's mom; I watched that one as a kid.

Here are some spooky similarities: Farrah Fawcett and Elizabeth Montgomery both passed away at age 62 of cancer of the GI tract (Farrah's was anal, and Elizabeth's was colorectal). Both shed their All-American images (Elizabeth as Samantha and Farrah as Jill) to become extremely respected dramatic actresses in daring TV movies. Both had long-term relationships with actors who were with them till the end (Elizabeth with Robert Foxworth, whom she eventually married after 20+ years of co-habitation and of course Farrah with Ryan O'Neal). Both actresses were beloved by fans and colleagues alike, both had beautiful blond hair and green eyes, and both actresses leave behind an amazing legacy of work and love. May they both always :rip:.

I called it earlier. I compared it to when Princess Diana died just before Mother Teresa, and overshadowed her death. A shame really, but it's nobody's fault really. The press covers what the people want. Look at the Farrah and Jackson threads here, for an example.

Another reason why June 25 will be remembered... it was the date of Custer's Last Stand in 1876.

I heard this at lunch, and I find this news much sadder than Michael Jackson's death. What a terrible way to die; suffering through so much like she did. She was incredibly beautiful and looked much younger than 62. I was surprised that she was in her 60's when they announced it on TV this morning. Very sad and she will be missed.

It must be messed-up for someone to die before his birthday in a calendar year. When I do a math problem to see how long a person lived, I would subtract the birth year from the death year, and then I get the person's age at his death. But when the person dies before the birthday in the death year, the math problem is complicated.

This is so true. My husband and I are always pointing out that these things seem to happen in 3's and I told him that I was worried about who the next person might be. However, I was reading in another thread on this board and someone had mentioned Ed McMahon. This is a prime example of the media's overpowering. I had completely forgotten about him and he's only been gone a few days.

I have no doubt that Michael Jackson's death has "stunned the world" but I feel almost guilty that it didn't "stun" me. I was kind of expecting it sooner or later, given his health history. I'm sorry if that is insensitive of me, but it's true.

That's absolutely right that Princess Diana's death received far more coverage than Mother Theresa's. I still have the People Magazine that was printed in memory of Princess Diana. I have to admit that the media had a field day with that and I found it ridiculous after a while. Let her rest in peace for God's sake!

Breaking her silence for the first time since her Charlie's Angels co-star Farrah Fawcett passed away yesterday, Kate Jackson chatted with EW exclusively today. The former Angel talks about how hard it is for her to talk about her dear friend, the first time she saw the "gorgeous, magnificent, glorious" Fawcett, and the legacy that the Hollywood legend left behind. Here is what Jackson told EW:

"I didn’t plan to do any interviews today. I was just going to go to the place that Farrah and I were together the last time we were together during this three years and just sit. But I love her so much. There’s no way that I couldn’t be part of a tribute to her, and you know, just give people my impressions of who Farrah is.

"I just remembered a minute ago that right after I came to Hollywood from New York, I went to my first party where there were Hollywood people, and I walked in the door, and I knew that Lee Majors was married. I saw Lee Majors. He was the first star I had ever seen. Then I realized someone was with him, and I was almost blinded by the most gorgeous, magnificent, glorious girl about my age, who was talking and laughing with him. I just froze and stared, and I thought to myself, 'Oh God, the competition is really bad around here.' And it [turns out the girl talking with Majors] was Farrah. I told her that later when we finally met because we didn’t meet that night—we officially met doing Charlie’s Angels—that she was the person that almost made me go home. I told her that she was darn lucky that I was still here to do this show because I almost went home because of her, when I saw her I thought, 'Oh God, I better go home and, you know, be a teacher or something.'

"She was so funny, and we had the best time that year that she did Charlie’s Angles because we got into the habit of just sort of ad-libbing on camera and trying to make the other one laugh, or doing something unexpected. I remember once, where other actors and actresses fight for their close-ups, we fought to see how tightly together we could get our heads so we could do a tight three that would be as tight as a close-up. We just wanted to go home! We were so tired! There was one scene… Jackie [Jaclyn Smith] was sitting on one end of the couch, and I was sitting on the arm of the couch leaning over toward her, and Farrah was standing behind the couch, behind us, leaning forward so that all of our heads were real close together. It was 11 o’clock on a Friday night, and you know, we finally said to the director, 'Now that’s a close up, isn’t it? It’s as close as you can get! Look, we’re all in there, and our heads aren’t even cut off.' So she had some line and was supposed to walk out the door. She said the line and straightened up and started to walk out the door with that energy, you know, and as she walked out, she just sort of tapped me on the shoulder. She knew what was going to happen. I completely lost my balance and fell off the arm of the sofa. They kept rolling and I said, 'I can’t believe you did that!' She was walking out the door and looked back at me and laughed. It was actually in the show. I saw it in the show that week. They left it in! They left in a lot of the stuff we did.

"When the first year of Charlie’s Angels ended, our friendship didn’t. It just grew stronger and closer through the years. I don’t know what the connection that the three of us have is, but it is there, and it is something extremely special. I think that is the reason the show worked. I think it’s even better than the movies because we truly cared about each other and still do. It was a pleasure and a privilege.

"It was not easy at times to be able to be with her these last three years and to be able to continue laughing. There was always, if few words were spoken, a zinger, though. Then there’d be a little light laugh, even through everything. She was just extraordinary and bright and as sharp as they come and beautiful and her courage, I just… I don't even know what to say about that. She was never a follower; she was always a leader. Her choices were her choices."

EXCLUSIVE: Farrah Fawcett Reunited With Ex Lee Majors Before Death
Tuesday June 30, 2009

Before Farrah Fawcett died of cancer, the star reconnected with her ex-husband, Lee Majors, after more than two decades of silence, a source tells Usmagazine.com.

"When Farrah got diagnosed, and it became public, Lee started calling Farrah's close friends to get updates on her," a source tells Us. "He did that for two and a half years. He just wanted to know how she was doing because he still cared about her as a friend."

The Charlie's Angels star wed the Six Million Dollar Man star in 1973, and although they were married for nine years, they were separated in 1979. When Fawcett was first diagnosed with anal cancer in 2006, Majors tried to contact her indirectly.

"He didn't feel like he could reach out to her himself -- it had just been too long, but he still cared about her deeply," the source tells Us. "He would send funny messages to her through friends, and she would do the same, and it was very sweet."

After the star's cancer came back, it had been 23 years since she and Majors had spoken.

"This past February, her birthday, he decided to call her for the first time. They spoke for the first time in 23 years," the source tells Us. "They had a 40-minute phone conversation about her life, and the cancer and it was such a lovely moment for the two of them. I guess it was a very good conversation. They joked, and they got a little bit emotional."

The source adds: "I think it was good given the current situation [for] closure, otherwise they never would've spoken again. I think he always wanted to talk to her again, but he was just afraid to speak to her before."

Although Fawcett never married again after her divorce from Majors, she had been dating longtime boyfriend Ryan O'Neal for nearly 30 years. O'Neal proposed to her countless times, but she always said no until last week when she agreed to marry him. She died a few days later on Thursday.

The source tells Us that although they had each moved on, their brief reunion meant a lot to both of them.

"[Majors] has a wonderful wife now, of course," the source says, "but Farrah will always be very special to him."

Farrah's Funeral: 'Goodbye Sweet Girl'
By Eunice Oh

Originally posted Tuesday June 30, 2009 09:40 PM EDT

A tearful Ryan and Redmond O'Neal joined Farrah Fawcett's closest friends and family for the actress's private funeral Tuesday afternoon at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles.

Marla Maples, Joan Collins and Tatum O'Neal were among the 200 guests attending the hour-long Catholic service, where longtime pal Alana Stewart and Fawcett's doctor Lawrence Piro delivered the eulogies.

"Goodbye sweet girl," said Stewart. "[Farrah] never felt sorry for herself during her illness ... she fought cancer furiously."

'Angel in Heaven'

"She's the most beautiful angel in heaven," Stewart added. "She always seemed so indestructible."

With city police and private security lining the streets, Ryan and Redmond arrived at the cathedral around 3:50 p.m. and served as pallbearers, carrying Fawcett's casket, adorned with yellow and orange flowers.

A man in a kilt played "Amazing Grace" on a bagpipe at the beginning of the service, which also included Bible readings and prayer.

After the service ended, vans shuttled guests to the reception at the Jonathan Club, where a band played Fawcett's favorite songs, including some from Van Morrison.

I'm so glad Lee reached out to Farrah and they were able to talk things out before she passed. How wonderful.

What a touching article. It is great that Tatum was there, seeing as she and Farrah didn't always get along while Tatum was growing up. It seems that they had become closer in the last few years.

Even though I knew it was coming, that didn't take away from the sting I felt when I heard about her death. She was such a beautiful woman, both on the inside and out, and I'm sure she is a beautiful  now. R.I.P. Ms. Fawcett, you are sorely missed!! And may God bless your entire family during this difficult time!!!

O'Neal's Son Blasts Dad Over Fawcett Funeral
3 July 2009 5:21 AM, PDT

Ryan O'Neal's estranged son Griffin has launched a bitter attack on his father after he was banned from attending Farrah Fawcett's funeral on Tuesday.

Father and son fell out in 2007 following a fight at the family home, which ended with Ryan firing a shotgun into the stairwell.

O'Neal banned his reformed drug-addict offspring from his partner's memorial service, insisting: "He's a bad guy."

But Griffin was left fuming because he wanted to be able to pay his last respects to his dad's partner.

He says, "I think he's afraid of me because I know the truth about what happened in the later days. He's a dark man and he needs to be put in his place. The reason why I'm not there is because I represent the truth and God forbid the truth coming out."

Speaking outside the funeral, Griffin told reporters, "She's mad I'm not in there."

The Charlie's Angels star's own troubled son with O'Neal, Redmond, gave a reading at the ceremony after he was granted a three-hour release from prison, where he's serving time on drug charges.

Fawcett died last month after a three-year battle with cancer.

^ YIKES. Though I did find it touching that Tatum attended, because they'd had a stormy relationship in the past. Tatum said on one of those shows (I think it was ET) that she thought Farrah was very brave.

I was going to post this about one month ago but couldn't find the article.

Farrah was very friendly, as this story shows. It was printed in the National Enquirer (March 11, 2003). The title of the article is "Cop To The Stars Tells All."

"I met her when she was a big star on 'Charlie's Angels' and was married to Lee Majors. They lived up on Mulholland [Drive]

One winter we'd had some really heavy rains, and there had been some landslides where they live. I got detailed to spend the night manning a barricade to make sure people didn't go up there. About two in the morning this Mercedes comes along it's Farrah Fawcett. It was pouring rain. I stopped her car. She was very nice. She lived just a little further up on a side street before you got to the slides so I opened the barricade and let her through.

Half an hour later I see her Mercedes coming back down and she'd brought me a plate of sandwiches, some fruit and a soda. She said, 'I feel bad for you being out here all night long in the rain, so I made you a little something.'

I was stunned. Here was this big star and she'd gone to all that trouble for me. I've always been a big fan of hers because of that act of kindness."

Nice story. The policeman's name is Terry Schauer.

That sounds like Farrah. She was so sweet. I always felt that her life would have been so much happier had she stayed with Lee Majors. He had a lot of class while Ryan, not so much. His kids drove her crazy, Ryan drove her crazy. I guess you can't help who you fall in love with or out of love with; but even at the time, I was disappointed that she ended her marriage with Lee Majors. She even took his name professionally. They made a gorgeous couple.

I have to agree with that. She and Lee made a great couple. She even had it written into her CA contract that she would be home in time to cook Lee dinner. She totally broke his heart when she dumped him for Ryan. Who knows how things would've turned out had she and Lee stayed married for the rest of her life?

When she left Lee Majors, my Mom said, "Why did she leave him for that guy (Ryan)?"

I was hoping I would meet her at an autograph show but she never did appear at the one I go to... Hollywood Collectors Show.

Rest In Peace Farrah, We All miss you very much.

Did anyone notice that Farrah and her sister Diane were both 62 when they died? and they both died of cancer.

That is so sad. Farrah's dad is the only survivor of the family, having outlived his wife and both of his children. :(
