This episode is towards the end of the second season. As expected it has lots of laughs but the writing was a bit too creative. No doubt the girls being stuck with an infant can lead to funny bits but good grief the writing was so unbelievable. Rose volunteers the girls to baby sit for a charity 10 mile walk. Strangers are going to drop their babies and children off at a stranger's house that they know nothing about. Let that sink in. Just drive up and drop off your babies and youngsters to a house you know nothing about. The girls get stuck with an infant Emily when the father does not show up. Eventually the father shows up and claims his wife went into labor with triplets. Wait. Your daughter Emily is 6 months old how is your wife giving birth to triplets? The episode also brings regret to Blanche since she claims she was not there raising her children and used a nanny. The episode ends with Blanche on the phone with her daughter Janet and it gets serious. The episode does not end on a laugh but a somber bonding moment between Blanche and her daughter.
The subplot is Sophia claiming she finished the race in record time for her age group. 10 miles for someone 80 years old?
The writers took some very creative turns on this one.
In a few more weeks the writers would also deliver "Empty Nest" where Dorothy accuses the neighbor of throwing up in their swimming pool New Years Eve. The girls never had a pool

My guess would be that they were ripping off some other show, and it didn't translate well. By Season 3, there are two episodes in a row - Blanche's Little Girl and Dorothy's New Friend - that are really bad copies of Cheers and Mary Tyler Moore episodes. There's an Odd Couple where Felix deals with a left-behind baby. It doesn't seem that similar to this episode, but maybe there's some other show that did the same premise.

I just saw this episode and it is sort of kooky.

Especially when the girls thought they were going to keep the baby and raise it. Complete strangers taking a baby and raising it themselves? The law would never allow that.
