Cliff and Claire were her step-grandparents, not strangers. Olivia was obviously very close to them, spent a lot of time with them, and she was Denise's step-daughter. Why would they have Olivia be so formal? It was obvious after a certain amount of adjustment time, that Cliff and Claire thought of her as their granddaughter.
