Forget Tom Cat, Sylvester the Cat, even Hello Kitty; the most famous and most iconic fictional cat in pop culture history is Garfield, the title character of the most widely syndicated comic strip in the world as recognised by the Guinness Book of Records. Since his debut on June 19 1978, we've come to know and love Garfield as that overweight orange tabby famous for his laziness and sarcasm, who loves lasagna and hates Mondays.

The character is responsible for over $1 billion in merchandise sales, a little too much to cover in one video, so today we're reliving Garfield's history in animation, from the original television specials in the 80s to Garfield and Friends becoming a staple of Saturday morning cartoons in the 90s before his big screen debut in the early 2000s.
