I am so tired of Nick at Nite playing that show like it's the only show on the planet.

lol- I'm willing to bet you get a bunch of votes for that one. Here's my list of overplayed shows that I wished would go away for awhile. My hatred for the show isn't involved. I sincerely believe these shows get overplayed too much.
The Cosby Show- I don't mind one or two airings for those that like this show, but it is so overplayed on N @ N.
Beverly Hillbillies- TVL and Hallmark, oh joy
Brady Bunch- It's been on for quite awhile. Kind of wish they would drop it and pick up a show that hasn't been seen in a long time.
Gilligan's Island- It's been on forever.
Happy Days- I like the Richie years, but they still overplay it. Cut down some airings and show something else
Czas na Zywiec 11-19-2002, 01:36 AM Yep, basically all of what Jenny said, but I'd like to add Friends. It's rerun here on my TBS and WB like 3 times each day. And I have 2 WB affiliates (One from Denver, one local) so I get double that on WB. I mean the show is still runnning in primetime. I say shows that are still in primeime should stay there and run older shows that aren't anywhere.

Ah yes, I completely forgot about Friends. I'd rather watch the older shows that aren't rerun too often. Take Archie Bunker's Place for instance. That one is a true rare show. If it wasn't for TVL showing the first 27 of them, I never would've seen them. I agree that ABP isn't as good as AITF, but I've never seen every episode of ABP to tell. I'd still like to get the episodes on tape and that way I'll know I don't have to mess with any stations playing them. I'd love to see the New Leave it to Beaver and of course FOL.
They are seriously screwing up the stations by showing all these shows that are still on primetime. Oh, how could I forget- they are screwing up some classic stations by making original shows. Look at Scifi. They used to be a true classic station and now they only have a few classic shows.

That's what sucks about these channels becoming popular. They start out with a lot of good old stuff, which I think is because they can only afford to air old shows at first. Then the channel gets good ratings, and makes enough money to start making its own programming. The same thing happened to Cartoon Network. It only aired old cartoons (a variety) from the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Now it airs mainly originals and anime. All the classics went to Boomerang, which I'll bet will be filled with Cartoon Network originals and new shows within a few years. Some other examples also include Game Show Network, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, USA, and many more.
BTW, the shows I'd like to see go away for a while are:
The Cosby Show (before I begin to completely hate it, I used to love it)
Friends
Cheers (same as Cosby)
The Drew Carey Show

LOL, Jenny, it's like you read my mind. Those shows are exactly what I would've come up with. I think in the next year I'll have to add Leave it to Beaver; I mean, yes, I do enjoy the younger years, and it was a great wholesome family show, but it's been on TV Land since 1998, it needs to be given a rest. I look at it this way when doing these threads: If I can sit through a show without rolling my eyes, then It's not overplayed, LOL, or like this, if it's on 4 times a night and good shows get shoved to practically nothing, then it's overplayed (Case in point: Nick @ Nite) I can't even look at the NaN promos without rolling my eyes at how cheesy and stupid they are.
RainMan 11-19-2002, 02:45 PM Friends, ER, and Murder, She Wrote.

You know I agree with you about Beaver. I love the younger years too, but I just can't stomach the later years. I cringe looking at Beaver when he's 12 and 13 years old. Oh man, the dancing episodes are the ones I cringe most at. However, it is overplayed. I like the show, but it's just so overplayed.
Glad to know I'm not the only one rolling my eyes at N @ N promos.
Brian Damage 11-19-2002, 05:19 PM The funny thing is, there used to be a time when shows that we're starving to see now, were considered overplayed like Diff'rent Strokes, Facts of life, Three's Company, Alice, What's Happening, etc, etc.

That is pretty ironic. LOL. I'm just waiting for the day when networks finally wake up and realize that 10 years from now, "modern hits" aren't always the way to go. With, of course, the exception of a few.

I don't think "Alice" was ever overplayed...
When I started watching it came on Monday-Friday at 5:00PM and 5:30PM (central). Then they moved it to 9:30AM (central), then its last place was 2:30PM (central).

I think I Love Lucy will be around forever more. I'm serious. Even in the year 2030, I bet they'll still have Lucy reruns.
TVJunkie101 11-21-2002, 08:34 AM I think all shows need rest from time to time. No matter how long they've been on, or how popular they are, they need a resting period. I mean, I can watch I Love Lucy for weeks, all day long, but it was unecssary for TV Land to pick it up right away. Let it rest for a few years. More people will want to see it then. I mean, wouldn't that make more sense? The more people want to see it, the more they tune in. I don't think shows should just be picked up JUST because they leave another network (Examples: Full House, Roseanne, Fresh Prince, MacGyver, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, Beverly Hillbillies). At least Hogan's Heroes got a couple months break before it was brought back; that's better than nothing.
I mean, no matter how big a fan I am, all shows need resting periods. And see, because networks just pick shows up just to pick them up (I will always believe that unless I see otherwise) when they leave a network, the shows that were once showcased fairly, well, fair, are now shoved to sidelines. I mean, wait until the contract is close to coming up before brigning on a new show to replace it. I think TV Land is finally starting to do that. A good example for TV Land would be in 1998, when That Girl, Mister Ed, and others were set to expire, TVL brought on several shows to fill the void. Well, that's fine, but those other shows were shoved to one timeslot early in the morning. I don't know where I'm going with this, but I'm sure most of you will understand. Gone are the days when networks want a show just to want it. TV Land is finally getting back to that (Mister Ed, Sanford and Son)

I really enjoy I Love Lucy, but like I said, ALL shows need resting periods. Like dawsongirl said, it makes people appreciate shows more. Yep. It seems to me that I get tired of shows fast if I watch something over and over again. I don't think tv channels realize that they do that either. I'll take Happy Days for example. If I was a big diehard fan of the show, (I like the Richie years, but the rest of the years suck imo) it just might seem soooooo cool that it's on like 5 times a day. OMG! I love Happy Days so much and it's on so many times a day. I love TVL. Fast forward to 3 months later- I'm gonna get a bit tired of it. I may watch it for an hour, but forget to watch it the other 3 times it comes on. Fast forward a month later and I'll hate it completely. It's just not good for the channel or for the viewer. The channel loses viewers and the viewer starts to hate the show that they once called their favorite.
*ShortCake* 11-21-2002, 09:42 PM I could watch ILL forever and ever without getting sick of it ;). But thats just me lol.. I WOULD LOVE for Beverly HillBillies to take a rest for ... a century or so. LOL They play it at least 10 times a day!!

Superbatboy 11-22-2002, 02:30 AM The Golden Girls is a perfect example of how shows fair well with resting periods. I hadn't seen the show in like 8 or 9 years, my mom had it on on 9/11 when there was nothing on but news casts and I watched it and have been hooked ever since. I'm sure eventually I'll have to stop watching for a while, and then go back to watching it in a few years. But shows DO need resting periods. WITH the exception of I Lov Lucy, I can watch the same Lucy episode 30 times in a row and still love it.

Oh, what a great reason. You don't like the show, so you think it should go off for months. That doesn't make any sense. It seems that everyone here picks on the 50s and 60s sitcom. You know, I'd bet a nickle and a quarter that the only reason people don't like the 50s and 60s sitcoms is because they know that there is no family like those families. I think it's jealousy.
Anywayz my choices:
Friends - Comes on like 21 times a week.
The Brady Bunch - Comes on 30 times a week.
Seinfeld - Comes on all my local channels at least two times a day.

I have to say that theory makes perfect sense, LOL. Infact when, (For Example) The Facts of Life left Nick-at-Nite, I grew into the show and I learned to get used to it after it was took from their schedule. Only a few months after it was took of, it felt like I needed to regain those memories, soon after it was took off each day it was off the air I became a bigger fan of the show. I wasn't even much of a big fan of the show when it aired on Nick-at-Nite but as the show aired I seemed to get into the show more, by watching it by episode after episode. Ever since it came to Hallmark I remember it a little more from it's Nick-at-Nite days and I can connect with the show from what I remember. Now that it has left from the schedule, every day it seems I would like it to air again and on Hallmark, and I'm waiting anxiously to see it again. But as time passes, I believe you appreciate the show when it is off air, and I know each show needs it's resting periods, so I can see why Hallmark took it off, and now I'm hoping it will return again to regain it's popularity. This is the case of many shows when they leave the air, fans respond to the show in a postitive way and catch on to the show after it has left.

I honestly can go from watching I Love Lucy to say, Friends in a day. I mean, I don't think badly of any show. I'd PREFER I Love Lucy over Friends, but that's not the point. What I'm saying is, I can watch any show, from any decade. You just can't compare any two shows. They each have their own pros and cons
Yeah, 50s shows are babyish, they were back when families were imagined as perfect, the mom in dresses and heels, the dad in suits, the kids were rascals but still good. Now a days Mom is working all day, Dad is working all day, and the kids are dirty and get into loads of trouble.
A big difference, so I understand where you are coming from. Yes, shows from the 50s didn't garner huge laughs, they were more serious in their tone (Father Knows Best, for example). I never saw Burns and Allen until this past summer when TV Land began airing select shows, and it's hilarious. I think to enjoy 50s shows you have to really remember what it was like back in the 50s (not that I would know, LOL, I was born WAAAAAAAAY after the 50s).
A good example would be last nights Inside TV Land: Cops on Camera. Producers, etc. basically said cops in the 50s (ex: Dragnet) were much different than today (ex: NYPD Blue) . I mean there was more, but I won't go in to it. Just think of it this way: all the shows in the 50s, 60s and 70s paved the way for the shows of the 80s and the 90s and today.
If you don't like shows from the 50s or 60s, that's fine, I mean, that's your own choice. I'm not too fond of many 90s sitcoms, but I do enjoy some of them today (8 Simple Rules, and others). I'm never one to tell another what to watch.
I just think others got upset by your statement because you said they were just "blah." So I guess I explained it for you? LOL?
