View Full Version : Why do you still post here?

As an old-timer around here it makes me happy that we still have this place to discuss UM cases. I also love the surprise of still meeting newbies. So I was curious, why do you all still visit this forum? I do it because many of the others out there, sadly Reddit included, have become toxic. No discussions, just insults and downvotes. I love coming back here to this safe space and chatting with you all, some of you I’ve known here for over 20 years. I’m also impressed with how you guys keep the cases updated. I don’t see this kind of respect and camaraderie in other places. So in addition to asking the question, I also wanted to thank all of you. 🫂🤜🤛

I think the knowledge of the posters here are incredible. when I first found this forum I was pleasantly surprised to see that there were others that loved UM as much as I did. that's why I keep posting here. I don't post on other true crime forums or post on Reddit at all. I have grown up on this forum. and I love to see it when family members post here and when an old case gets updated. and it's always nice to take a dig at the Mark Nichols and Randall Utterback's of the world every now and again.

There is always something potentially new to uncover from these old cases. They serve as important lessons that still apply to everyday life in this age. I enjoy tuning into the episodes on streaming services as a form of immersion in the old school ways, especially because I feel as though all my grandparents (who are no longer around), feel close by in spirit.

We all loved the show, grew up with it in my case. Was TERRIFIED by it as a child in my case! But still loved it, actually loved being scared while watching it. Strange isn't it? Anyways, we are all true crime buffs, and true crime is never boring, it never dies. Some of the UM cases are still active, some have been solved, some of the people have died. It is always interesting to check up on the cases that have updates and see what happened.

In my case, I still post here because it still remains a friendly and safe place to explore our obsession with UM. We might spend pages and pages of a thread arguing some minute detail of the case of Charlotte Pollis, Norman Ladner, Rae Ann Mossor, and some of the others, but there is a community that's unlike any other online.

I cannot speak for everyone here, but there seems (IMO) to be a common thread: we care about the victims and their families, even the family members that rub us the wrong way, because we can all agree that, with a few exceptions of really evil people, nobody deserves what some of these families have gone through or are still suffering. We all want justice to be done.

For me, as many of you who have been reading my posts know, I came here because of the Beverly McGowan case. We all have that one case we're low-key to outright obsessed with. Beverly McGowan is mine, and NOT just because the "Sam" composite freaks me out. BTW, I appreciate finding a community of people that is just as afraid of that thing as I am, so I don't feel quite so silly. But I stay because you all care.

Beverly McGowan touched me in a weird way. Single woman alone trying to make it in this world and she's killed in such a senseless way, like several of the female victims. I didn't even know her, and she has been dead over 30 years, but thinking about what was done to her for someone else's evil gain still upsets me. I know it happens every day, to so many people, to the point that we become numb. There's something that reaffirms our humanity that we all passionately care about these people that we will never know except through UM and research and when one of their friends or relatives pops on here.

I came because of the case that obsessed me. I stayed for the community.

This is literally the only place I post online anymore, mainly because it is a civilized place where we can all discuss one of our favorite shows free of both trolls and power hungry members/mods. As an example, I made a post on another forum full of facts and personal anecdotes, was downvoted to oblivion and someone who made a plain wrong statement on the subject matter was upvoted to the top comment. Even on the rare occurrence when I don't agree with the majority here I never feel there is a mob mentality.

As I mentioned when I first joined, I thought I was one of the world's most knowledgeable UM fans until I see some of the well thought out and research posts and replies. Hopefully this continues long into the future!

I keep coming back because I am always hopeful some of the cases I first saw long ago will someday be solved. Luckily, a large number of cases have been solved but there are still so many others that I hope will be solved. It is pretty awesome that so many old-timers here keep coming back :)

Because I'll never stop loving UM and the posters here are great. I've seen a lot change in the 18 years (!!) I've been on here, but those are the two things that have been consistent.

I don't post here, because I don't know anything. I do look in occasionally (mostly about famous cases) and find it useful - actual exchanges of views that clarify the outstanding issues. That's unusual for internet discussion.

Agree 100%. Even when a discussion veers into controversial territory (e.g. politics), I don't see the outright nastiness that pervades many subreddits and even infects Nextdoor of all places. It's a friendly, helpful community of UM fans. I thought "Star Trek" fans (of which I am one) were the best until I met UM people!

Still after all these years, too!

I’m another old timer. I keep coming back because, why not? Especially in these days of DNA solving cold cases. Eventually there will be something new to share and/or discover on here.

reddit is painful to read on multiple levels. From the layout to the people.

MOST of the time, around here, we can disagree and argue and still maintain respect for others opinions.

I rely on the fact that most people here are friggin' Rain Man like when it comes to cases that were aired on UM.. There's been multiple times I've posted about "oh, that case with the guy who.." and it's immediately answered with the name of the person.

And.. I used to work for the competitor of the forum software this place runs on.. This is vBulletin, I worked for Invision. So.. I know exactly how everything works here. lol.

Even though the site is called Sitcoms Online, this is our most popular individual TV show board with almost 170,000 posts. It's nice to see we still have many regulars and new members talking about the segments.

Thanks to everyone who has visited and posted since the board was launched in July 2001. We're coming up on our 25th anniversary. Time sure flies.

We have been running vBulletin since December 2001. It's still the best forum software ever made for desktop/widescreen.

When I joined nearly 17 years (!) ago, I never imagined I would still be posting nearly two decades later. Why I stayed:

1) This is the only place I can talk about UM with people who are also big fans! Outside of family, I know very few people who watched the show in its heyday in real life, and this is a great community of posters.

2) This place is a treasure trove of additional information and updates about cases

3) Most discussions are great. Either we have great banter ("What is taking so long?" has to be one of my favorite threads ever! This is when Amazon was taking forever to upload season 5) or we have long threads in which the cases are discussed down to minute details and we bounce theories off of each other. As a UM nerd, I just love it.

I think this show holds a special place in so many of our hearts, and I really love to come in here and see that still kept alive 23+ years after UM aired its final original episode.

170,000 posts for UM? If that isn't a testament to the power of this show and the fans, I don't know what is.

Next month, it will mark 26 years since I created my account (April 1, 2000). Although, I didn’t realize there was an Unsolved Mysteries board here until 2002. And I’ve been posting ever since.

I love the other longtime posters here and the continued discussions over the cases we have all obsessed about forever. There are so many cases I saw as an elementary school kid that never left me and I still research them online.

And one of the best things was celebrating together here when longtime cold cases were FINALLY solved after decades. Cases like the Baskin kids, Wendy Camp, Tanya Vanculenberg/Jay Gibbons, Bobbie Oberholtzer and Annette Schnee, Lisa Ziegert, just to name a few. Many of those cases I had given up hope of ever being solved. So you can imagine my shock when I log on here and see a post with our favorite words; Update, solved, reunited and captured.

The real people featured and interviewed on this show stuck with me since I was a kid and I can't help getting emotionally involved in what became of them.

Mainly it's because any time I have tried to discuss the cases with my friends and family, I have only been met with blank stares. This is the only place I have come across people who know even more about these cases than I do.

absolutely same for me with the updates that I have read on this forum and how much post activity goes on when that happens. two that stand out for me are orange socks and EAR/ONS. I know the latter was also popular outside of UM, but those are two examples of cases that I once though may never be solved. tanya and Jay as well. I don't know how, but I did not see that segment until 2014, some 7 years after I joined the forum and then it was still several years later before that was resolved. I'm now left to wonder what will be the next cold case that gets solved.

I'm a longtime lurker and first time poster. Of course I am a huge fan of Unsolved Mysteries and enjoy researching the cases. I remember when I was a kid and forums like this were in their heyday. It's great to see this one is still going strong after all these years. Both message boards and Unsolved Mysteries are so nostalgic to me. It's a perfect blend. :D

welcome! glad you are posting now. I love this site just as much today as I loved it when I first joined almost 19 years ago now. can't believe it's been that long, but a fair amount have been on here longer than that. I hope I've matured some on here and I actually think we can make a case that the decorum has gotten better over time. I guess that's hard to quantify and I struggled with that at times. always had my ups and downs on here and some time gaps in my posts, but I really think this is one of the best places on the web to have a respectful and serious discussion.
