We’ve got movie sign!
In 1996, Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie blasted off into theaters… for about five minutes. Studio interference, brutal runtime cuts, and a microscopic release nearly doomed the big-screen debut of Mike, Crow, and Tom Servo. And yet, against all odds, it survived — becoming a cult favorite and gateway drug for generations of Misties.
In this video essay, we celebrate 30 years of metal-lunan madness by diving into the wild behind-the-scenes story of how MST3K made the leap from the Satellite of Love to Universal Pictures. From Prince’s Paisley Park to baffling studio notes, from deleted endings to “Normal View,” this is the strange, hilarious journey of the little movie that just kept riffing.
Whether you’re a longtime Mistie or just discovering why “This Island Earth” will never be the same, grab your bots and keep circulating the tapes.
It’s just a show — you should really just relax.
Show Synopsis: Welcome to our new series Awfully Good, where we take a journey through the world of "so-bad-it's-good" cinema. Mystery Science Theater 3000 revival Kickstarter raises nearly $2.7 million (https://variety.com/2026/tv/news/mystery-science-theater-3000-rifftrax-revival-kickstarter-1236691175/)
“The campaign raised a total of $2,695,849 from 22,189 backers, both of which are Kickstarter records for RiffTrax,” says Variety’s Joe Otterson. “While not as much as raised by previous fundraising campaigns to revive the show in recent years, the initial goal was to raise just $20,000 in celebration of the 20th anniversary of RiffTrax. Both RiffTrax and Shout! had previously said the new episodes would be produced regardless of the fundraising total.”
