Neil Patrick Harris is celebrating his 50th birthday. Harris was born in New Mexico. As a child, he met playwright Mark Medoff at a drama camp. He made his acting debut in the 1988 feature film Clara’s Heart, which was written by Medoff.
Harris starred for nine seasons on How I Met Your Mother, as Barney Stinson. He received four Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy, as well as two Golden Globe nominations.

Harris first became well know as the teenage star of the ABC sitcom Doogie Howser, M.D. The series, about a child prodigy who graduates from medical school at the age of 14, ran from 1989-93. Harris has a long list of TV guest credits, and has been a regular on the short-lived NBC sitcom Stark Raving Mad and on Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.
Harris made his feature film debut in the aforementioned Clara’s Heart. He has had prominent roles in films ranging from Starship Troopers to Undercover Brother to Gone Girl. He played a fictionalized version of himself in the three Harold & Kumar films.
One noteworthy part of Harris’s career has been hosting awards shows. He won four Emmys between 2010 and 2014 for hosting the Tony Awards. He has also hosted the Oscars and the Primetime Emmys once each. Harris has also had a very busy voice acting career.
Harris began a lengthy stage career in 1997, as Mark Cohen in the national tour of Rent. He made his Broadway debut as a replacement in the original production of David Auburn’s Proof, and subsequently appeared in the musicals Cabaret and Assassins. He won the Tony for Best Actor in a Musical in 2014, for starring in the original production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
Earlier this year, Harris returned to Broadway, to star in the original production of the play Peter Pan Goes Wrong.
