Beaver wants to use his savings to buy some ice skates on sale--he protests when Ward wants to accompany him--he's too big for that. Ward gives in, so Whitey goes along.
The crooked salesman has no size 6s left--but an upside-down 9 will do the trick. The skates feel way too big to Beaver--but the explanation the salesman gives is that he should wear three pairs of socks like the pros do.
At the skating rink, Beaver finds out they're so big he can't stand up--Whitey finds his toes and says another foot would fit in there.
Since Beaver took a stand on buying the skates, he hides out at the library rather than face his parents. When Wally runs into him there, Beaver explains what happened. So Wally tries to get Beaver's money back from the salesman--to no avail.
When Ward reads that the skating rink closed for repairs, he eventually finds out what happened to Beaver--and is able to get the money refunded.
