View Full Version : Who else is tuning out the world's problems with TV?
24/7 reruns 01-24-2026, 05:47 PM I'm sure many are not happy with the world's problems. I've turned to TV for distraction.
Between sports and '50's-'70's sitcoms I've managed to not get too caught up it crap that's going on. Escapist sitcoms from the '60's are what I spend the most time watching.
Live sports also are helping to keep me grounded. It's been interesting reading that most live sports events have scored the highest ratings late last year and early this year. I can see why FDR requested for baseball to continue during WWII.
If you're using TV for this purpose what are you watching?
stevea 01-25-2026, 12:37 AM Mostly the 60s sitcoms and animation. TV News - local only - and only to keep up with the weather.
Dude111 01-25-2026, 01:06 AM I am grateful to have all the analogue stuff I have...
I cant stand all this flat digi crap that has no meaning!!!
Good 60s shows being shown in a void.... Its just sad....
ThisLittlePiggy 01-25-2026, 01:48 PM I'm watching a lot of The Golden Girls and Hallmark Mystery movies.
I tried to watch The Mary Tyler Moore Show but they gunned down Mary Richards in the streets.
Good thing Rhoda moved to New York.
Reinhold_Weege 01-25-2026, 08:07 PM I am watching various sitcoms and dramas from the 1960s up through 2010. Good quality characters and storylines.
Dream Canteen 01-26-2026, 06:09 PM I watch a lot of MeTV Toons while my country implodes. I can’t stand more than a few minutes of news per day.
Coffeecup 01-31-2026, 05:47 PM Oh Yes. I tune into many 1950- late 1970's series. With so many stations, some are internet types I can watch so many shows, that I never saw for I was too young. Sometimes I think, hardly any actors still alive.
My Neighbor has CNN on all day. Not for me.
Dude111 01-31-2026, 06:42 PM Dont ya feel bad ya cant easily enjoy these shows like ya did then?? (In thier original beautiful analogue format)
:(
stevea 01-31-2026, 07:23 PM No.

Always. Without these escapes I dont know what I would be doing
NFL is ending next week after the SB so it will be NBA and antenna TV at night to watch One Day at a Time. Youtube is my emergency back up when its nothing.

I’m looking forward to baseball. That’s my biggest escape. I’m not too terribly into the other sports.

Any specific team?

Mariners. I just moved out of Washington, so I’ll need to subscribe to MLB.tv to follow them this year, subject to blackouts when they play the Dodgers or Angels.

They had a good season. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of numbers Cal Raleigh puts up this year.
Dianne3 02-02-2026, 03:17 PM Over the years, I've had a few periods where I stopped watching news altogether. The problem when you do that is you end of missing something that would have interested you.
For news, I mostly stick to local. But usually at some point in the newscat, the news that I was avoiding comes on. But I still do watch local mostly during the week. On the weekends, there usually is less local content.
I do regularly watching classic TV shows and movies on TCM. I am currently watching shows like the Rockford Files and the Mod Squad.
The Olympics will also be a distraction.

The Olympics can, and often do, become highly politicized.

This will be the Mariners’ 50th season and the beloved Rick Rizzs’ last year calling games on the radio after having spent the better part of 43 years with the team. It would be the perfect time for the M’s to make it to the World Series for the first time, and I think Cal and Josh Naylor can get us there.
It’d be amazing to see Seattle win the World Series and Super Bowl the same year. Are you listening, NBA?
