View Full Version : Regarding June’s Actions in Ward’s Millions
Sgt. Saunders 01-08-2026, 06:53 AM In this fourth season episode of LITB, Beaver buys a book for his father entitled, “I Became a Millionaire in Twelve Months,” in the hope that Ward will become a millionaire himself.
While Ward is very doubtful that the book is of any real value and worth, Ward assures Beaver that he will read the book and put it in an honored spot in his library. Unfortunately, after Ward asks June to take care of the book for him, June places the book in the “cookie drawer” as she answers the phone in the kitchen.
Beaver later finds the book (which he paid $2.98 for) in the cookie drawer, covered with crumbs and chocolate chips. Beaver, quite understandably, is very upset and hurt to find the book there.
However, after a talk with Ward, Beaver learns from his dad, that you cannot always believe what is written in a book. As usual, Ward provided his young son with both practical and perspicacious advice.
Yet, I think that June was extremely careless and flippant in leaving Beaver’s well-intentioned gift to Ward in the cookie drawer. And, I expected to see June apologize to Beaver for her hasty and thoughtless act before the episode concluded. But, no apology was forthcoming from the usually caring and tactful June Cleaver.
Do you think that the LITB writers were remiss in not having June apologize to her son for her careless handling of Beaver’s gift to Ward? I think that they were remiss in not having June do a heartfelt “mea culpa” to her young and sensitive son.
ThisLittlePiggy 01-08-2026, 05:02 PM Did Ward tell June to put it in the library or not? I don't remember so I'm asking.
Sgt. Saunders 01-08-2026, 06:17 PM I think that Ward just asked June take care of the book without specifically mentioning the library. Still, June should have not carelessly placed Beaver’s present for Ward in that cookie drawer. Knowing how much Beaver wanted his father to read the book, June should have taken better care of the book.
Tankeryanker 01-08-2026, 07:41 PM Sigh. Growing up, we never had so many cookies that we needed a whole drawer.
stevea 01-08-2026, 09:44 PM I think Beaver told Ward, from his perch in the tree, that he found the book in that drawer.
Here's what Ward should have said to that: "Son, I had the book out at the table, and your mother and I were talking about it. I'm sorry it ended up in the drawer, but I didn't put it there. Cone on down and let's find out what happened."
Or, in a way it would have never been written:
"Son, your mother must have put it there. Come on down, and let's go give her what for."
Sgt. Saunders 01-08-2026, 09:46 PM Can you imagine how “well-stocked” the cookie drawer in the Rutherford household must have been with both Lumpy and Fred (two very healthy eaters, obviously) looking for a snack?
And, don’t get me started on how incredibly “well-stocked” the cookie drawer in the Mondello household must have been with both Larry and his father there, on the rare occasions when Mr. Mondello was actually home from one of his business trips to Cincinnati.
stevea 01-08-2026, 09:51 PM It certainly looked like Mrs. Mondello hit the cookie drawer, too.
Sgt. Saunders 01-08-2026, 10:34 PM It certainly looked like Mrs. Mondello hit the cookie drawer, too.
That’s a great point!
Can you imagine the Mondello family in 2026? The entire family would be likely trying Weight Watchers, Ozempic, Dr. Stillman’s Water Diet, Gastric Bypass Surgery, Lap-Band Surgery, etc., etc.
ThisLittlePiggy 01-09-2026, 08:22 PM Sigh. Growing up, we never had so many cookies that we needed a whole drawer.
We had a couple of junk drawers for string and stuff, not a lot of cookies.
ThisLittlePiggy 01-09-2026, 08:24 PM Did the Mondellos have apple trees in the backyard for Larry?

Yes, they had an orchard back there. Outtake in one of the episodes lol
CosmicCharlie 01-10-2026, 09:08 PM I didn't even bother to rewatch that episode when it came in rotation .... it does nothing for me - no worthy comedy - lol I thought this show was for kids +-
Not much going on in this episode that a kid would be interested in

Maybe if they had Beaver fall out of the tree, and Mr. Gus took him to the ER in his fire engine...
CosmicCharlie 01-10-2026, 10:39 PM Now THATS Entertainment !
Sgt. Saunders 01-11-2026, 05:40 AM If itinerant circus worker Mr. Jeff had knocked on the front door of the auxiliary fire house that Mr. Gus was stationed at, do you think that Mr. Jeff would have gotten past that front door like he did at the kitchen entrance to the Cleaver residence or would Mr. Gus have told the amiable hobo to hit the road?
stevea 01-11-2026, 07:48 AM Mr. Gus would have poured Mr. Jeff a Honolulu Punch and sent him on his way lol
Sgt. Saunders 01-11-2026, 09:07 AM However, if Fireman Gus just happened to answer a phone call from Beaver while Mr. Jeff was standing in the fire house station doorway, would the wily Mr. Jeff have had the chutzpah and quickness of mind to “borrow” one of Fireman Gus’s extra fireman uniforms during Gus’s and Beaver’s phone conversation?
Tankeryanker 01-11-2026, 10:01 AM Maybe if they had Beaver fall out of the tree, and Mr. Gus took him to the ER in his fire engine...
Or have boys up a tree during a dinner party with a real life...teacher as a guest.
vitoscotti 01-11-2026, 03:47 PM The episode raises the question if Ward could possibly have a million dollar portfolio when he retires from work? But, when you Google how much white collar workers made in the early 1960s it wasn't much. Also, there weren't no load mutual funds, and tax deferred retirement accounts yet. But 100k in the early 1960s would have the buying power of 1 million dollars today. Then Ward was quite savvy so was he on the ground floor of technology and pharmaceutical investing through his broker (high fees I'm sure) that he's mentioned multiple times? I remember he mentioned he invested in utilities in the episode where Beaver and Wally buy stock. Fascinating episode.
CosmicCharlie 01-11-2026, 04:05 PM white color workers
it's white collar workers

:D
Howard 01-11-2026, 06:46 PM No I don't think the writers goofed especially when she takes the phone call, people sometimes do things like that in the moment when they're trying to do two things at once. Maybe they wanted to show more of an everyday mistake people make.
Howard 01-11-2026, 06:48 PM And especially, Larry who was always eating something!

Yes, to me that was really a normal thing. I can see someone doing that.
I can also see an upset tween doing something extreme, like climbing a tree.
But the kid telling his father why he's upset: I'm trying to think what my reaction would be, as the father. My first thought might be: I never put the book in the cookie drawer.
Hard to know what I'd say after that. I might just tell him I didn't do that, and let's see what happened.
