Melanie Watson Bernhardt -- an actress known for her role on the hit TV show "Diff'rent Strokes" -- has died ... TMZ has learned.

Robert Watson -- Melanie's brother -- tells us ... Melanie passed away Friday in Colorado Springs.

We're told Melanie -- who was born with osteogenesis imperfecta, a disease where a person's bones fracture easily -- had been in the hospital after suffering some issues with bleeding, where she quickly deteriorated.

Robert says the doctors did their best to help her ... but, in reality, she was fortunate to live as long as she did with her condition. he adds he will always think of his sister a great deal.

Fans of classic sitcoms will remember Melanie as Kathy Gordon on "Diff'rent Strokes" ... a part she played in 4 of the show's 189 episodes (https://www.suggest.com/beloved-guest-star-on-80s-abc-sitcom-dies-at-57-rip-to-melanie-watson/2910003/).

A 1982 episode was memorably named after her character ... in which she and Gary Coleman's character, Arnold, argued when he tried to convince her to walk without crutches.

Bernhardt retired from acting after "Diff'rent Strokes" ended ... later marrying a man named Roger Bernhardt from 1994 to 1996. She reportedly helped found the charity Train Rite to help properly train dogs to work as service animals.

Melanie was 57.

I didn’t realize she was only on four episodes. It seems like she was much more a semi-regular.

Amazing to think it’s been so long, yet the impact she made during her time on the show.

Did she ever interact with the cast after the series ended?

Sad news to hear. She e-mailed me way back in 1999 to give an update. She was a member of the Diff'rent Strokes mailing list group I started.

She told me she was able to hook up with a couple of friends from the show. I know she was in contact with Steven Mond and probably Shavar Ross as well. She did see Todd Bridges periodically. She said she would have liked to catch up with Gary Coleman if she got the chance. I don't know if that reunion ever happened.

It did seem like she was in more than four episodes. Kathy Gordon was a memorable character. She said "cool it, turkey" as her catchprahse. You didn't see many people in wheelchairs on TV in those days.

Todd Bridges posted about her on his Instagram page.
