Brittany,
I work as a 1.st A.C. on one of four complete camera units. I am responsible for
the assembly of the camera, zooming and focusing of the camera during shooting.
In current sitcom production we utilize 4 cameras and crew shooting simultaneously.
On each camera crew we are named: "A" camera, "B" camera, 'C" camera and
"X" camera. This has been the tradition naming cameras that shoot film instead
of video tape. In video they just assign numbers to the cameras. The reason why
they use "X" camera instead of calling it "D" camera is because in the early
production days of sitcoms using film cameras, i.e. "I Love Lucy", later
"Happy Days", "Laverne & Shirley" they only used 3 camera crews and so
there was only "A", "B", and "C" cameras used. When the show "Taxi"
first started shooting the set was bigger and needed more visual coverage
and flexibilty so they implemented the use of an "eXtra " camera. From that
day forward the fouth camera always was named "X" camera for being the
extra camera.
This is my 2nd Season working on my "Wife & Kids" but I got my early sitcom
experience from the shows above excluding "I Love Lucy".
