In the episode "Uncle Billy", Beaver tries to sneak Gilbert Bates in the
theater using the exit door while he watching the movie because Gilbert
doesn't have any money...of course the two get caught and are taken to the
manager's office by the theater usher and the manager asks
Beaver that he has to call his parents at home. Uncle Billy
is the only one home when they call and the home phone number Beaver
gives the manager was KL 5763. This verifies a ficticious 6 digit
phone number used in Mayfield.

As you recall in earlier episode, Wally ask June to call ahead
to tell Julie Foster that he was on his way over.
June dials 6 digits to contact Julie.

So this is so totally fictictious because we have established that
during the time of the series airing, phone companies were already
using 7 digit phone number starting with a two letter prefix followed
by 5 digits. My home phone number in California during 1962 was
DAvis 9-2505 with no area code yet. My phone number in 1955
was UPtown 8-9238 while I live in Chicago.

Okay, I just had an idea. Anybody into 80s music over here? You remember that song 867-5309 (Jenny) by Tommy Tutone? 867-5309 was really a real phone number but the group didn't know that. People started prank calling this # and that just caused this big uproar about the song. If I remember correctly, some magazine printed the phone #'s of the group members.

I guess why they gave it 6 #'s instead of 7 would let people know that this was def. a fake # and you couldn't prank somebody by dialing Beaver's phone number. Just a guess.

That's why on TV today when people give a phone number it always starts with 555. That way no one can make prank calls to a real number they hear it on TV.
