I have heard he has had a troubled life since being reunited with his father. Does anyone know how he and his father are doing today?

aside from the one update that I recall, no. But for those that did not hear of the update before, this is from UM fandom Wiki:

"In a surprising twist, in January 2011, Jonathan, then twenty, was arrested for attacking Gilbert. He was charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of inflicting great bodily injury. The attacks occurred in June and October 2010. During the first one, he stabbed Gilbert in the chest and screamed at him about "what [he] had did to [his] mother." He then took Gilbert to the hospital, where Gilbert said he was attacked during a robbery. During the second one, he beat Gilbert. Gilbert again said that he was attacked during a robbery. However, after that, a family member called Sgt. Anderson and told her that Jonathan was responsible for the attacks. Gilbert then confirmed that Jonathan was responsible.
At the time of the attacks, Jonathan was living with Gilbert and other family members. After his arrest, he claimed that the attacks were in "self-defense". His attorney claimed that it was related to his issues involving adjusting from living with Elizabeth to living with Gilbert. In September 2011, Jonathan pleaded no contest to felony assault and inflicting bodily injury. He was sentenced to one year in jail and also received a five-year suspended sentence. Then, in August 2012, he was arrested and charged, along with two other men, for the July 2012 attack on an alleged rival gang member.
In 2013, Jonathan pleaded no contest to a charge of felony assault for the 2012 attack. He was sentenced to four years in prison along with a concurrent five-year sentence for the 2010 charges."

It doesn't sound like Gilbert can catch a break. His wife nearly kills him by poison, and then his son nearly kills him too. Of course there is likely something more to this story. If your wife and your son both try to kill you then it is possible you aren't a saint either and there could be some secretive stuff involved. Or maybe there is a lot of trauma with Jonathan, which makes sense too.

not sure why Jonathon attacked his father. I'm sure he had a lot of trauma from being kidnapped and taken out of the country and then taken back to his father. he probably would have been upset about the latter because he was old enough to have made bonds with people that were most likely severed when he reunited with his dad. I think Gilbert was the victim in all of this, especially of the poisoning.

It's also possible Jonathan's just a bad guy. Nothing to do with his mother at all. If everything had never happened, he'd be the same person he is now.

yes, very possible, and some people with good parents end up being violent criminals. there's not always a rhyme or reason. people make their own choices. but yet that's not what happened. so, I think his upbringing did him in somewhat and I surmise that his mom trashed his dad to him and that builds a lot of resentment in a child. the good news is that as he grows older, he can understand more clearly who the bad person was in that relationship, considering his mom tried to kill his dad and then kidnapped him. hopefully he is able to repair his relationship with his dad.

I'm not in any way defending Jonathan for what he did. that was a terrible choice regardless of what happened to him in the past. and we only know what Gilbert said on the segment. we don't know if Gilbert was violent with Jonathon in any way..

It is possible, but let's think of it this way, his mother whom he loved turns out to be an attempted murderer of his own father - whom he never knows. He is stripped from his mother and forced to make a bond with a father he never knew. That can cause trauma that I can't even begin to imagine.

As laughable as some of Elizabeth's lines are, the woman absolutely makes my skin crawl. What a horrible person.

Elizabeth was an absolute psycho. Did they ever pin down a motive for the poisoning?

This is such a sad story, like imagine going through all that and your son still hates you. I hope Gilbert is surrounded by love.

Jonathan was part of a horrible situation that did him no favors.

When Elizabeth took off with him, she (no doubt) made it clear to him that your father is a monster...he wants to kill me...he doesn't love you...I had to try and kill him in self defense...yadda, yadda, yadda. When those lies have been pounded in your head year after year after year, you're not going to want to believe anything else. Then when your mother gets arrested and you're forced to live with the man that you've been manipulated to despise, it's not going to be pretty. You don't see the truth. All you see is a man who is a monster. The damage has been done.

Jonathan would be in a much better place had he had a normal upbringing. Family abductions can really screw kids up, even after they've been located.

This

To a much lesser degree I have some experience with this. No crime involved thankfully, so it’s nothing like this segment. But being lied to as a child is very destructive and basically destroys relationships that are almost impossible to fully mend. Sadly there are several segments on UM where parents or family members are very destructive to children. Dennis DuPue is one famous example.
