Few things in life are such an institution of American pop culture like The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. For over a century, millions of Americans have traveled to New York City to watch it, while millions more enjoy the NBC broadcasts from the comfort of their own home. While the parade is known for it's Broadway performances and celebrity cameos, the most iconic part of the parade are the massive Balloons that parade down the city streets. These balloons, which sometimes reach heights in excess of seven stories tall, are as awe inspiring as they are massive, but in 1997 it wasn't awe they inspired as much as fear. This is the story of the 1997 parade, when high winds led to the worst accident in the history of the parade, and the story of one woman who cheated death in New York City not once, but twice.
