When I was younger I had pen pals all over Europe and there was always an excitement about going to the mailbox and finding a letter, writing back and anticipating a response. Is this still thing or has technology ruined it? It's hard to see how this could still happen when you can just jump onto the computer, phone, fb, etc and chat with someone anytime

No I suppose you can try to write to someone and hope they write back :)

Yes I have a pen pal from Oklahoma and have been pals since the early 1990's.
I like it for I can write 4 pages of news and she can enjoy all of it or pass over some and I won't know the difference. We are the same age and have much in common. We write once a month.

Wow. That is really cool. :)

Not really pen pals per se' , but I have some relatives back east that we send each other cards on birthdays and holidays and write a nice long letter along with it. It's nice. :)The younger ones of
course just want to text a happy birthday or holiday greeting though!

Not to be cold, but I wouldn't write to a convict for just my luck, they want me to do something, that I wouldn't feel comfortable doing

When I was younger I had friends that were pen pals with guys in prison. One even ended up marrying when he got released. He wasn't in jail for a really horrible crime. ;)

Prisoners are pretty much an open book when they are in jail. Usually prison roster list all the information about them including their photo, arrest records, date of birth, city resident and release date. Just be careful not to give them your home address. Communicate via work address or P.O.Box :)
