If Stranger Things season 5 is the event that Netflix says it is, then it should be shown on the big screen.

In a Variety cover story (https://variety.com/2025/tv/features/stranger-things-5-duffer-bros-ending-spinoffs-1236551615/) published last week, creators Matt and Ross Duffer expressed interest in showing the series finale in theaters, with Matt saying: “People don’t get to experience how much time and effort is spent on sound and picture, and they’re seeing it at reduced quality. More than that, it’s about experiencing it at the same time with fans.” But Netflix chief creative officer Bela Bajaria shot down the idea, telling Variety: “A lot of people — a lot, a lot, a lot of people — have watched Stranger Things on Netflix. It has not suffered from lack of conversation or community or sharing or fandom. I think releasing it on Netflix is giving the fans what they want.” According to Puck News’ Matt Belloni (https://puck.news/newsletter_content/what-im-hearing-nbcu-succession-netflixs-next-theater-deal-baris-pr-battle/), the series finale will be screened in theaters. “(The) Stranger Things finale *will* go to theaters: Remember last week when I suggested the recent talks between Netflix and AMC Theatres could lead to more theatrical partnerships beyond KPop Demon Hunters on Halloween? Now I can report that the two-hour Stranger Things series finale will debut in AMC and other theater chains on New Year’s Eve, the same day it drops on Netflix.”
Netflix confirms Stranger Things’ series finale will screen in theaters for a limited time (https://deadline.com/2025/10/stranger-things-series-finale-theatrical-streaming-release-1236594896/)
Screenings will take place in over 350 theaters in the U.S. and Canada starting on December 31 at 5 pm PT, the same time the series finale drops on Netflix globally, through Jan. 1, 2026. “While rare, stunt theatrical engagements for hit TV shows are not unprecedented,” says Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva. “Netflix held screenings of Stranger Things 4: Volume 2 in various cities across North America on "‘Stranger Things Day’ (Nov. 6) 2022, months after the installment’s streaming premiere. This means that the Season 4 and Season 5 finales of Stranger Things — both movie-length, spanning 2+ hours — will have had a short-window theatrical run. HBO released at least two episodes of Game of Thrones in theaters after their TV premieres, also for promotional purposes, including to hype a DVD release. Debuting an episode of a TV show in theaters and on streaming has not been done before. It resembles the day-and-date movie release strategy where films are simultaneously released in theaters and on streaming platforms or VOD the same day.”
Stranger Things finale will screen in more than 500 theaters: Runtime set at 2 hours and 5 minute (https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/stranger-things-finale-netflix-theater-locations-runtime-1236597324/)
Fans who want to experience the finale in theaters will have New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
