Back in the 70s/80s (and some of the 90s), radio stations would use something very similar to 8-track tapes to record individual songs and commercials on. They were called "carts" (short for cartridges). The quality was very good (keep in mind FM radio had a high frequency limit of 15Khz) and they ran at 3 3/4 inches per second. The same as 8-track tapes.

All the radio stations I worked at as an on-air DJ in the 80s and 90s used them. Then came CDs which replaced them for the music and soon after that, everything ended up on the computer and that was the end of carts!
