...as Star Trek and Star Wars?
Question: Why did the Stargate franchise not have as lasting an effect on Science Fiction as Star Trek and Star Wars? (https://www.quora.com/Why-did-the-Stargate-franchise-not-have-as-lasting-an-effect-on-Science-Fiction-as-Star-Trek-and-Star-Wars/answer/Jon-Mixon-1)

It’s the new kid on the block - Stargate came around in 1994, nearly thirty years after Star Trek and nearly 20 years after Star Wars. It’s new and it’s not experienced many of the cultural and historical affiliations and touchstones that its two older brethren have.
It’s never had the star power that both Star Wars and Star Trek have had in its cast - Star Trek has had six Academy Award winners in its casts in both its films and its television series. Star Wars has had eight. Stargate has had only Louis Gossett Jr. in a relatively minor role years into its run. Stargate lacked a great deal of the “star power” it needed to be more successful.
No Kurt Russell (and to a lesser extent, James Spader) - While the 1994 film’s lead has stated that he’s NOT interested in television work, the producers of SG-1 REALLY could have helped things out if they could have “fit” him into a role at some point during the earlier seasons of the series. Additionally as seen in his long-running action/crime drama The Blacklist, James Spader has a great deal of personal appeal. The series and the franchise never tapped into those men’s popularity to increase its own. Both Star Trek and Star Wars have widely used their legacy characters to their advantage and, in doing so, have bolstered their franchises.
The Showtime/MGM/Syfy debacle - Basically Stargate’s production history has been a series of disasters. The franchise needed the stability that both Star Trek and Star Wars have experienced (Yes, even the Disney move increased stability) and it’s never received it. An unstable Stargate was/is a less popular Stargate.
The movies - Other than the progenitor film, the Stargate films have been varying degrees of terrible. The twin closure films for the Sg-1 narrative universe were bad television films and MGM cancelled the third offering. Star Trek and Star Wars have well-developed film franchises and television productions which make both the superiors to Stargate.
Stargate may well recover as its likely that a new series or film is on the horizon.
However unless it takes things in a new direction, it’s doubtful that the series will ever move from its role as a Battlestar Galactica peer, into vaunted realm occupied by Star Wars and Star Trek.
