On my DOS computer I have a game called APBA Pro Hockey, the game came out in the early 1990's. Last night I started playing the 1975-76 NHL season, playing games right off the actual league schedule. The 1975-76 season began on October 7th 1975 with just one game on the schedule, I played the game last night and the result was:

Pittsburgh 2 at Washington 3

Game summary: Despite being outshot 37-22, the Caps surprised the Penguins on opening night in Washington, squeaking out a 3-2 win on home ice. Ron Low was huge in goal for Washington, stopping 35 of 37 shots on goal. Ron Schock and J. Bob Kelly were the goal scorers for Pittsburgh. Ron Lalonde, Jack Lynch, and Hartland Monahan were the goal scorers for Washington, with Monahan netting the game winner in the 3rd period.

There's six games on the schedule for tonight, I'll play those later and see what happens.

I was hoping for an opening night road win for California, but scoring only one goal was not going to cut it.

The 2-0 road win for the Kings over the Canadiens was a surprise, but that's one of the things I like about this game, sometimes the unexpected happens. Rogie Vachon was hotter than a firecracker in goal for the Kings.

Here's how this APBA Pro Hockey game works: I create the rosters and line combinations for all the teams, each team has 20 players, 12 forwards, 6 defensemen, and 2 goalies. The players are graded and rated based on their real season stats. The computer plays the games and there is a play by play text that scrolls across the screen, it takes the computer about 40 to 45 minutes to play a full 60 minute game, 3 periods of 20 minutes each. The game does have an overtime option but I currently have it turned off because the NHL did not yet have regular season overtime in 1975-76. If I decide to do playoffs then I will turn on the overtime option, but right now I'm just planning to complete the regular season and that won't be done until early in April.

In my computer replay, the Islanders won their season opener by a 5-2 score over Kansas City. Next up for them is a home game vs. the LA Kings on October 11th.

In the actual 1975-76 season, the Islanders were the 2nd ranked team defensively, 1st ranked was Montreal who went on to win the Stanley Cup.

Easy home ice win for Philadelphia over a woeful Washington team. Bill Barber netted 3 goals for the Flyers. Nelson Pyatt and Tony White netted goals for the Caps.

Boston actually had a 1-0 lead going into period 3, but Montreal then scored 3 unanswered 3rd period goals, the 3rd goal being an empty netter late in the period with time expiring to seal the win.

Buffalo on home ice had no problems with Detroit. Rick Martin netted 2 goals for the Sabres. Gerry Desjardins gets the shutout win in goal.

Just one game on the schedule for October 10th 1975, NY Rangers at Atlanta.

Rangers and Flames skate to a 2-2 tie in Atlanta. New York goals were scored by Phil Esposito and Steve Vickers. Both Atlanta goals were scored by defensemen, one from Ed Kea and the other from Barry Gibbs.

Some interesting games on the schedule for tonight, one of them is Vancouver at Chicago, an early season battle between division rivals.

I'm not happy that my California Golden Seals team has started the season with two losses, in the real season they won their first two games, but no such luck in the computer season. Oh well that's the way it goes. They play tonight but it's a road game in Philadelphia so unless they can manage an upset they will go to 0-3-0. After Philadelphia they have another road game at Minnesota, then a home game vs. Washington, they should be able to win at least one if not both of those.

Golden Seals played a spirited game vs. the Flyers to get an upset road win in a tough fought defensive battle. Al MacAdam and Rick Hampton scored the California goals. Gilles Meloche gets the win in goal.

Black Hawks played very well in their home opener but had to settle for a tie vs. the pesky Canucks.

Just two weeks into this computer replay of the 1975-76 NHL season but it's been fun so far, overall I'm liking the results, I put a lot of work into creating the season disk and grading and rating the players, with the desired outcome to have the computer league standings be fairly close to the actual standings.

This anticipated game did not disappoint, an exciting and closely contested matchup between two bad teams, with Kansas City getting their first win of the season in Washington at the Cap Centre. Guy Charron scored the winning goal for the Scouts in the 3rd period. A very interesting game.

The Seals had a weird schedule in 1975-76. From now until the end of November, most of their games are on the road. Then from the end of November until the end of December, they play 12 straight games on home ice. Strange schedule.

The Seals currently have 2nd place in the Adams Division but I don't expect it to last, I think eventually they will drop to 4th/last place, especially with a road heavy schedule coming up over the next month. Then they will have a chance to make up some ground in the standings when they have that 12 game homestand.

Probably the most interesting game on today's schedule is Boston at Montreal. Can the Bruins win a tough road game or will the Canadiens continue their winning ways? Also today is Philadelphia at Pittsburgh, that has some potential to be an interesting game.

In a battle of the New York teams, Rangers played much better compared to their previous game vs. Buffalo, but the result was another loss. Rangers actually had the better of the play and outshot the Islanders 33-24, but Glenn "Chico" Resch was strong in goal for the home team. Rangers have just one win so far and the Islanders just one loss.

Flyers skate past the Penguins on the road in Pittsburgh at Civic Arena.

How about that, Bruins take down the Canadiens on the road at the Montreal Forum. Canadiens peppered Boston goalie Gilles Gilbert with 40 shots on goal and he stopped all but two of them. Conversely, Bruins had just 17 shots on goal but five of them went in the net. Bruins seem to be coming on now after the slow start. Montreal's two losses so far have both been on home ice.

Sabres stay on a roll with a fairly easy road win vs. the Red Wings at the Detroit Olympia.

Chicago's Dennis Hull scored the only goal of the game in the 2nd period. Tony Esposito gets the shutout win in goal for the Black Hawks at Kansas City's Kemper Arena.

Game was tied 1-1 late in the 3rd period, then Marcel Dionne scored to give Kings the lead. Then Mike Murphy added an empty netter to seal the win for L.A.

Sabres blitzed the Seals with four goals in the 1st period, then put it on cruise control for the rest of the game.

Just one game on the schedule for October 27th 1975 but it's a goodie, NY Islanders at Montreal. Will Montreal give the Islanders their 2nd loss of the season? Look forward to play this one and see what happens.

Trailing 2-1 after period 2, Islanders then dominated the 3rd period for an impressive road win in Montreal. Canadiens having problems with the home games lately. Serge Savard, Mario Tremblay, and Guy Lafleur scored goals for the Canadiens. Bryan Trottier, Jude Drouin, JP Parise, Clark Gillies, and Andre St. Laurent scored goals for the Islanders, St. Laurent's goal being an empty netter late in the game. Islanders still have just the one loss and it might be a while until they lose another, will see what happens.

Kansas City and Washington play vs. each other again tonight, this time the Scouts are the home team. The previous game between these two bad teams was pretty interesting, will see how this one goes.

Another painful loss for the Black Hawks vs. the Red Wings. This time, Black Hawks raced out to a 4-0 lead and then the Red Wings scored six straight goals to take the win. Great win for Detroit and miserable loss for Chicago.

Vancouver still with only the one loss after besting the Blues in St. Louis.

Maple Leafs crush the Scouts on Maple Leaf Gardens home ice. A 7 goal outburst in the 1st period put this game away early and quickly.

The play by play text that scrolls across the screen can be adjusted to go at varying speeds, but with the speed I have it set at, it takes the computer about 40-45 minutes to play a full game. I find this speed to be just about right, not too fast or slow. I just sit back and watch the screen as the computer plays the games. Buffalo goalie Al Smith played strong and kept the Sabres in the game. Jacques Lemaire scored the game winner for Montreal with 2:56 left in the game.

Capitals played a decent game on home ice but lost their 13th straight game. They're easily the worst team in the league but they'll win another game eventually. At least I think so. :lol:

Maple Leafs handle the Red Wings in a higher scoring game at Maple Leaf Gardens.

The Blues/North Stars game was an interesting one. 7 of the games 8 goals were scored in the 1st period. Then no goals were scored until 2:25 left in the game when Norm Gratton netted the equalizer for Minnesota.

Golden Seals dominated the game, outshooting the Scouts 36-16, but fell a goal short on the scoreboard. I had a feeling this would happen after the Seals surprise win over the Islanders in the previous game. Robin Burns scored 2 of the 3 Kansas City goals. Scouts goalie Bill McKenzie played a strong game.

Great game between the Bruins and Sabres in Buffalo as they skate to a draw and split the points. Sabres jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three goals from Danny Gare. Then the Bruins came back with three goals to tie the score. Rick Martin then scored to give Buffalo a 4-3 lead. Then Boston defenseman Darryl Edestrand scored the equalizer for the Bruins with 2:09 left in the game. Really good game between two top teams.

It probably won't make much of a difference in the teams' overall performance, but I made a few slight adjustments and tweaks to the Capitals roster. Bob Gryp and Mike Marson are out of the lineup, and Rick Bragnalo and Mike Lampman are in the lineup. Just thought I'd shake things up a little since the computer simulation team is doing so poorly with only 1 win in their first 17 games.

The real Capitals team of 1975-76 finished the season with an 11-59-10 record, so this is just a bad team and not much can be done to try and improve them in this computer simulation.

I also made a roster lineup change with the North Stars as they are another struggling team. Norm Gratton is out and Steve Jensen is in.

Since today is an off day with no games scheduled, here's a few observations on this computer season I'm playing:

The Sabres have gone into a tailspin and lost recent home games to California, Detroit, and Kansas City. This is unusual but it happened.

The Bruins have been on a hot streak for a good while and currently have the best record in the league.

November 26th begins a stretch of 12 straight home games for California. Their next road game is December 30th.

So far overall, the computer league division standings are fairly similar to the actual standings. I'll post a standings update after the November 30th games are played.

I was expecting a close game, but the Islanders won it rather handily.

So far, the Canadiens are underperforming in this computer league. They're leading their division but are not dominating the league like the actual team did. Currently, the Bruins are dominating the league with the Flyers close behind.

And it's been an interesting saga for the woeful Capitals team. They won their season opener, then lost 19 straight games, now they've won their last two games and both were shutouts. I expect they'll return to their losing ways but at least they've shown signs of life in the last two games.

In the Vancouver-Montreal game, the Canadiens had the better of the play and a decisive shots on goal advantage but could only score once against Vancouver goalie Gary Smith. Montreal sure has had some tough luck losses so far in this computer season, while Vancouver has had several games break their way.

If it was possible I wouldn't mind going back to 1976, but it's fun re-living the past with this hockey game I'm playing. 1970's hockey was the best. For one thing, the boards and playing surface weren't littered and splattered with advertisements like they are nowadays.

It's been a strange computer season for an underperforming Montreal team. Pittsburgh still has a chance to pass them for 1st place in the Norris division.

Good news, I've decided to do playoffs and will delay starting the NBA season I plan to play, NBA season is now planned to begin mid-May instead of mid-April.

Here's how the playoffs are going to work, 12 of the 18 teams will qualify. There will be four rounds of playoffs, preliminary rounds, quarter finals, semi finals, and finals. Each playoff series will be a best 4 out of 7 games, so it will require a team to win 16 games to claim the Stanley Cup.

The 4 division winners will draw a bye and not compete in the preliminary rounds, the 4 division winners automatically go to the quarter finals.

The other 8 playoff spots will go to the 8 teams with the most points in the standings, seeded 1 thru 8. #1 will play #8, #2 will play #7, #3 will play #6, and #4 will play #5. This will be the preliminary rounds.

Still a few days left in the season but as of right now these are the 6 teams on the outside looking in and NOT qualifying for post season play:

Reggie Leach of the Flyers led the league in goal scoring with 69 goals.

LA Kings had the league's stingiest defense/best goaltending, allowing just 180 goals against for the season. This was a bit of a surprise as the Kings were ranked 8th defensively in the actual season.

Basically yes, I did put a lot of work into this but it's something I enjoy, it's work but it's fun.

The most time-consuming part was creating the player disk for the 75-76 season, starting with giving each player on the 18 teams his actual season stats, then assigning each player his computer game ratings on offense and defense, penalty ratings also, then assigning line combinations for all the teams.

Each team has 12 forwards and 4 offense lines. The first two lines are the main scoring lines and power play lines. Lines 3 and 4 generally get a little less ice time and are also used as penalty killing lines. Then there are the 6 players on defense and the 3 defensive lines.

Overall, I think the regular season turned out pretty well, standings fairly accurate. And so far the playoffs are going good as well.
