Throughout the last six decades, Star Trek has had its fair share of notable and borderline controversial episodes. But for many Trek fans, one particular episode that stands out from the rest is a divisive installment of Star Trek: Voyager that aired for the first time nearly 30 years ago.
Voyager fans are likely familiar with the Season 2 episode titled “Tuvix,” in which Tuvok (Tim Russ) and Neelix (Ethan Phillips) are sent to collect samples of botanicals from a planet. When the pair beam back on board the U.S.S. Voyager, the two accidentally merge at a molecular level due to the presence of the plant they collected.
The pair, by merging, formed an entirely new being, Tuvix, played by Tom Wright. Captain Janeway’s (Kate Mulgrew) ultimate decision to order that Tuvix, whose personality was a perfect combination of the two characters, be separated back into Tuvok and Neelix has been the cause of controversy among Trek fans for decades.
At a recent Star Trek convention in New Jersey, Mulgrew opened up about Janeway’s decision, per TrekMovie. At the convention, put on by Creation Entertainment, an audience member brought up the subject of Tuvix, saying that the character “had it coming.”
“Janeway did the only thing she could do. Was she going to keep Tuvix over those two guys?” Mulgrew began. “I loved those guys. Easy choice. Had to make it look tough. But easy, easy,” she said. Janeway’s decision to essentially kill Tuvix was one that divided fans as one of the biggest moral dilemmas the captain had to face.
