View Full Version : Did the Gloria character remind anyone else of a teenager?
TVFactFan 11-09-2002, 02:46 PM I thought the Gloria character was supposed to be a grown women but she ALWAYS reminded me of a teenager by the way she whined, moaned, and cried. Her character not mature at all. Actually her character was immature the entire time she was on All in The Family. I can say she was mature on her spinoff-"Gloria" but never on All in The Family
DarleneIllyria 11-09-2002, 04:17 PM She did have her immature moments, didn't she

I can't think of that many mature moments
Brad Russ 11-10-2002, 05:50 PM If you think about it though most all tv shows have a character or two who are in there 20's, or 30's, or above who are incredibly immature. I mean Lucille Ball's character was in her 30's and she could be pretty immature. I think what annoyed me most about Gloria was her cry. Everytime she does that annoying cry I reach up for my ears.

Yeah when she cried she reminded me of a 8year old

I think they were trying to rip off Lucy's famous wail whenever Gloria cried. People thought Lucy wailing was pretty funny, so I guess that's why they kind of did that with the Gloria character.
I guess why they wrote the Gloria character to be immature at times was to emphasize that she is still Archie's 'Little Girl' She did have her mature moments on AITF. It's just kind of hard to notice because the immature moments far outrank the serious/mature moments.
Moonlight Lady 11-11-2002, 12:27 AM Gloria had her moments and so did Mike. I don't know which one was worse.

Mike did have his moments. I can see why Archie called him a meathead.

I remember Mike having moments when he lost his temper but not moments when he was immature

I agree with that! Also, any woman that calls her father "daddy" into her 20's......

Losing your temper, and overreacting, as Mike often did, is immature in itself.

Adults lose their temper also. Mike always reminded me of a grown man but Gloria never reminded me of a grown woman.

Of the two, he was the more mature person, but Mike had his immature moments. Of course, trying to get your point across to a man like Archie would make most of us lose our temper.

Yep, I agree with everything you said Janice.
Adam the Great 11-11-2002, 04:44 PM Sometimes Gloria acted even more immautre then a teen-ager. When she got a pink slip from Kressler's she gave it the raspberry. Although as it turned out Gloria had the right to be annoyed at Kressler's because the let her go, due to her pregnancy. Still, Gloria did the raspberry almost as much as Archie did. Now would you call sone doing the raspberry mature?

You know what I forgot all about the rasberry-which was VERY VERY CHILDISH every time Gloria did it. Thanks Adam.
DarleneIllyria 11-11-2002, 09:18 PM Look at Archie. He was a grown man and look at how many times he blew a raspberry. Some things become habit if you stay around long enough. Not talking about on screen now, but off screen in the stories. I bet when Gloria was a little girl, she heard Archie blowing a raspberry all the time. Gloria got used to hearing it so much that she started doing it and may not have even realized she did it almost as much as Archie did.
Moonlight Lady 11-12-2002, 04:40 PM The fact that Gloria hits Archie or pokes or pinches him. That's something a child would do. Very immature, not to mention disrespectful, IMO.

I agree wholeheartedly at the last word of the statement: disrespectful. I found Gloria to be disrespectful of not only Archie but Edith as well. One episode where she told Edith that she is nothing because she did not deal with Archie the way she thought she should. Given the character was right out of high school when she got married and very naive about life I can see how her behavior was childish.
Personally I thought Mike and Gloria displayed a great deal of immaturity. Especially when living under someone else's roof getting free room and board and behaving like that was a bit much.

I could understand a few of Gloria's childish moments. It's kind of like when you have your kid in a candy store. If you don't buy me a Kit Kat bar, I'll cry....Don't make me cry right here in the middle of this store. Spoiled is what you call it. Apparently Edith and Archie spoiled Gloria rotten when she was younger.
Mike should've had better sense. I'm not bragging about this fact, but my father acts a lot like Archie Bunker. If I got married tomorrow and my husband moved into the house with my family and my husband acted like Mike did- my father would've kicked him out a long time ago.
Moonlight Lady 11-18-2002, 11:46 AM I'm wondering if Gloria had couple brothers or sisters, she might be a little less bratty and spoiled. What do you think? :)

If she was the oldest among the brothers and sisters, it might've helped. If she was the youngest, she prob. would still be bratty and spoiled.
mstewart 11-21-2002, 02:35 AM Here is another point about the Gloria character that was nerve grating for me was her women's lib soapbox she would get on. Her tirades reminded of an out of control child throwing tantrums to get her way.
