Let’s break it down (https://www.lipstickalley.com/threads/were-the-huxtables-millionaires.5991319/) and see what’s what.

Cliff

Graduates college and medical school. Never implied that he’s some great overachiever who excelled in everything. Seems like an average Joe who was able to make it through college and medical school. Did he get full ride scholarships or did he and his parents have to pay for the bulk of it? More than likely it’s the latter, so we have Cliff (or maybe his parents or help from his parents) paying for college and medical school. He was a veteran, so we can assume he was eligible for the GI bill, but did it cover everything? Doubtful.

He’s a doctor, but not a famous or prominent one. Just a local OB/GYN. Assumingly no revenue from books, speeches or media appearances. Just his income from being a staff doctor at the hospital, and his private practice. I’m sure he made good money, but did it realistically cover they lifestyle they portrayed on the show?

Clearly had expensive tastes. Clothing, dining, accoutrements, etc.

Claire

Graduates college and law school, while going through at least two pregnancies and taking care of two children (assumingly, based on her age and the timeline). Maybe she got a full ride for everything. Maybe her parents were rich and paid for it all. It’s never really implied whether or not she came from money. But whatever the case, going through college and law school while being pregnant and raising children is a lot of stress.

She’s a lawyer, but early on, it appears that she is basically a staff attorney, maybe even a new one. Later on, she is a partner, but the audience doesn’t really see the grind it would take to get her there. She may be more prominent in her field than Cliff was, later on. She made tv appearances and had high profile clients. But she was still, it appears, basically a local attorney, with no particular notoriety.

Impeccably dressed and styled, with tastes as expensive as her husband’s. She had a dressmaker who made house visits!

Purchased a $12,000 painting without blinking an eye.

They as a couple

Owned a large, luxurious brownstone in Brooklyn, NY.

Two vehicles at least.

Have five children to feed, clothe, maintain lifestyles of, send to college, etc.

Take in another child (Cousin Pam), whom I assume they are doing so without financial help from Pam’s parents.

Offer to pay, not only their daughter Sondra’s law school education, but their son-in-law’s medical school education, when they decide not to go to graduate school and open a wilderness store. In what reality does someone’s in-laws pay them to go to medical school??? Heathcliff Huxtable volunteered to do so like it was nothing. As far as we know, he may have ended up paying for Elvin to go to medical school, since he eventually did go.

Considered paying for Pam’s college education (Claire’s 14th cousin twice removed, lol) when she was showing interest in going to college.

Mind you all of this, and they never, ever indicated any financial concern at all, minus Cliff’s frugalness when it came to spending money on his children. They got really tight when it came to every day extravagances for the children, but everything else, they seemed to have money falling from the sky at them.

I recently read a debate (https://www.lipstickalley.com/threads/for-legit-members-of-the-black-bourgeoisie-elite-upper-middle-class-was-the-cosby-show-authentic-and-relatable-to-you.6045523/post-113212998) of sorts over whether or not it was realistic of Cliff to be able to pay (https://www.lipstickalley.com/threads/for-legit-members-of-the-black-bourgeoisie-elite-upper-middle-class-was-the-cosby-show-authentic-and-relatable-to-you.6045523/post-113216035) for his son-in-law, Elvin's med school tuition to encourage him to go. To make a long story short, if Cliff is an established obstetrician in New York City, who owned a practice that catered to people who could afford to go to a private hospital to deliver and Clair was a partner at her law firm, then they would have been at least, making somewhere in the mid-six figures collectively in 1980s money.

To determine if the Huxtables were millionaires in the context of the 1980s and early 1990s, we have to look at their net worth rather than just their annual income. Based on their assets and spending power, they almost certainly held millionaire status by the show's later seasons.

1. The Real Estate Asset
The most significant indicator of their wealth is their home. The Huxtables lived in a four-story brownstone in Brooklyn Heights (though the exterior used was in Manhattan).

Market Value: In the mid-to-late 1980s, a renovated brownstone in that area would have been valued between $700,000 and $1.2 million.

Equity: Given that Cliff and Clair were in their mid-40s and had established practices, they likely held significant equity in this property, which alone could have pushed their net worth toward the million-dollar mark.

2. Household Income vs. Expenses
The Huxtables were a "Power Couple" with two high-earning professions:
The OB/GYN: A successful private practice OB/GYN in New York during the 1980s typically earned between $150,000 and $250,000 annually.

The Attorney: As a senior partner at a firm like "Bradley, Corbin, and Huang," Clair’s salary likely matched or exceeded Cliff’s, potentially bringing in $200,000+.

Combined Income: Their household income was likely in the $400,000 to $500,000 range (roughly $1.1M to $1.4M in today's currency).

3. Indicators of "New Money" Wealth
The "money falling from the sky" perception stems from their disposable income behavior:
Art and Culture: Clair purchasing an Ellis Wilson painting for $11,000 (roughly $30,000 today) at auction is a classic millionaire move.

The Tuition "Safety Net": Cliff’s casual offer to pay for medical school for Elvin and law school for Sondra—simultaneously—suggests a liquid cash reserve or "educational trust" in the mid-six figures.

The Lifestyle: The custom-made clothing, high-end appliances, and lack of "bill-paying" scenes suggest they were well beyond living paycheck-to-paycheck.

Answer:
Yes, the Huxtables were millionaires. While they weren't "ultra-high-net-worth" (like the Carringtons on Dynasty), their combination of prime New York real estate, dual professional salaries, and significant liquid assets for multi-child private education comfortably placed them in the top 1% of American households in 1984–1992.
