It’s Jane Curtin’s birthday today; the Queen of the Deadpan is celebrating her 71st. Curtin grew up in the Boston area, and dropped out of Northeastern University to pursue a career in comedy. During the early 1970s, Curtin was part of a comedy troupe called The Proposition. She also did some stage work, including starring in and co-writing the book for an off-Broadway musical, Pretzels.
In 1975, Curtin was chosen by NBC as one of a group of “Not Ready For Prime Time Players,” who became the cast of a variety/sketch comedy series that would run on Saturday nights. It eventually acquired the title of Saturday Night Live. Curtin remained with SNL for its first five seasons. She was known for her role in the Coneheads sketches, and for her character of Enid Looper. Curtin was also the “anchor” of the Weekend Update sketches from 1976 until her departure from the show (usually sharing the anchor desk with Dan Aykroyd or Bill Murray).
After leaving SNL in 1980, Curtin went on to major roles in a pair of popular sitcoms. She starred as Allie Lowell on CBS’s Kate & Allie from 1984-89, and won two Primetime Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. In 1996, Curtin began appearing as Dr. Mary Albright on 3rd Rock from the Sun. She has made periodic feature film appearances. In 1980, she and her future Kate & Allie costar Susan St. James starred alongside Jessica Lange in the crime comedy How to Beat the High Cost of Living. She rejoined Dan Aykroyd to star in a feature adaptation of Coneheads, and was the voice of Muffy the Wasp in Antz.
More recently, Curtin was a regular on the first three seasons of the CBS crime drama Unforgettable. Earlier this year, she appeared in The Spy Who Dumped Me, as the mother of Kate McKinnon’s character.
