Persia White tells PEOPLE exclusively about how Girlfriends could be made into a movie in the near future
Girlfriends aired on UPN for six seasons before ending its run on The CW in 2008 at the conclusion of its eighth season
The sitcom is currently streaming in its entirety on Netflix
Girlfriends, the TV show, could soon become Girlfriends the movie, according to one cast member.
In a new interview to celebrate the sitcom’s 25th anniversary, Persia White tells PEOPLE exclusively that turning the beloved series into a film could be a very real possibility in the foreseeable future.
“It came up during our get together,” the 52-year-old actress, who starred as Lynn Ann Searcy from 2000 until 2008, says of her recent outing with her castmates at Los Angeles’ Chateau Marmont.
An Instagram carousel posted by Reggie Hayes (William) showed him having a celebratory dinner with co-stars Tracee Ellis Ross (Joan Clayton), Jill Marie Jones (Toni Childs-Garrett) and Golden Brooks (Maya Wilkes), as well as show creator Mara Brock Akil.
The show follows four Black women who are best friends living in Los Angeles as they support each other through life's many ups and downs.
“She's into the idea. She said she would love to do a movie,” White tells PEOPLE of Akil, 55. “And I know that the cast, most of us have said at different times to the press, we would love to.”
However, White adds, “It's not just us. It takes a whole village.” For now, their main focus appears to be “proper funding.”
“So, I mean, it's the most exciting I've heard since we've all talked about a movie for all these years,” the Vampire Diaries alum says.
“I know there were times where people were busy, people were in different places and doing different things. But now it looks like the stars might align if they can get the funding, which, I think it's completely possible because — money, there are people with a lot of money,” White tells PEOPLE while laughing.
White adds that Akil, who has always taught the ladies “to know your value, know your worth and that we deserve a seat at the table,” says she “wants it to be done.”
The Morgan White Productions co-owner says Girlfriends executive producer Kelsey Grammer has also shown interest.
“He's been talking on the red carpet about, ‘Oh, I would do Girlfriends.’ And I was like, ‘Is he serious?’ I need to know. I literally need to know for my own mind and my own sanity. Like, are you serious?” White tells PEOPLE with a smile.
Luckily for the cast and fans alike, “he's down.”
White recalls a conversation with Grammer, 70, where he told her, “it took him seven years to get Frazier rebooted," which gives her hope that the same can happen for their beloved hit series.
“At that time, we were so new, especially in the very beginning. And he came on set a couple times,” she says, noting that the cast saw him as “this veteran comedian who has a solid show.”
“And it was exciting also because to have someone of that caliber champion four Black women and one Black man, that was pretty special, too,” White tells PEOPLE.
Girlfriends seasons 1 through 8 are currently streaming on Netflix.
