Penny has signed to appear on Fox's new comedy Mulaney. She and Lorraine Bracco will be paired as a lesbian couple who are friends of Elliott Gould's character, who is the title character's neighbor:

What's funny is reading comments sections on different sites saying Cindy should have been cast as her other half. Talk about a reunion!

It would make one hell of a sweeps week casting stunt.

Without a doubt. I mean, how did they not get to that? Missed opportunities. smh

I wouldn't particularly care to see Cindy Williams cast as I feel like that would only re-emphasize the lesbian rumors about "Laverne & Shirley" (which I think are ridiculous), but since I watch very little current television shows anyway- I don't really care. Hope Penny Marshall does well with the new show. It was fun to see her and Cindy together again on "Sam & Cat" recently.

People would be looking at her as Laverne, and have a hard time accepting her as a different character, if they paired her with Cindy Williams. I think that would be a mistake.

I disagree..They're pairing worked on Sam & Cat, they even showed an inside joke with their apartment building names.

Especially in this instance, where the pair appears to be supporting to a supporting character, who cares if they evoke L&S? It's all win. I think any show runner worth his salt looks at the idea of Penny and Cindy playing lovers and sees rating points and dollar signs. That is one hell of a hook right there.
And as to somehow altering the legacy of L&S, that seems a bit far-fetched a worry to me. L&S is legend. Even if you wanted to, you couldn't retcon those characters 30 years on, no matter how fun or provocative it is to think of them in other contexts. :D

FYI, for those in the area, they're taping the second ep of this show tomorrow, and from what I've read, it's Penny's first appearance on the show. Get tickets to the taping here: http://on-camera-audiences.com/shows/Mulaney
