In 1988, The Golden Girls aired an episode that dared to cross boundaries — of race, of age, of what love was “supposed” to look like.
“Mixed Blessings (https://goldengirlsnfriends.freeforums.net/thread/637/hulu-pulls-mixed-blessings)” begins as a comedy about Dorothy’s son marrying Lorraine, a confident, older African-American woman. But beneath the jokes is a mirror, reflecting our own discomforts, biases, and fears.

This was more than just sitcom laughter. It was a conversation about family, prejudice, and the courage it takes to love someone the world tells you not to.

Over thirty years later, the episode still resonates — not because it was perfect, but because it was honest. It reminds us that acceptance can come in unexpected ways, and that joy is often found on the other side of discomfort.

It was ridiculous that this episode was pulled from streaming. I said it then and I say it now. The person who created this video did a poor job explaining it because he left out the most important part: context.
The reason the episode is so funny is because of the reverse stereotypes that are set up in the script. Dorothy is venting at Michael before Lorraine's mother comes and is going around the living room with a feather duster cleaning. When Lorraine's mother comes inside she thinks Dorothy is the house keeper. A common stereotype white people have against black people in a nice home. The black woman must be the maid. We get it again when its not the white family upset about race but the black family. Another reverse stereotype for humor. When Blanche and Rose come in the living room Lorraine's mother assumes they are Michael's parents until Rose has to explain its mud on their faces. Blanche and Rose never tried to be black nor did they try to impersonate a black person. The joke was the reverse stereotype that Michael must be black and they have a white house keeper. The mud on the faces kept this joke going. It was brilliant. It was not done to mock anyone but kept the reverse stereotype jokes going.
It was beyond ridiculous to pull the episode because of jokes that got people to think outside the box with race.

What about "The Rowdy Girls" episode of Designing Women? There was a big scene at the end with Suzanne in blackface. It's currently on Hulu. Was there ever a time when it was pulled from there?
