did anyone else notice it seems like andy seems like he is a lot more comfortable when don knotts is on the show after don left he didnt seem like the same old andy:(

Yep, I noticed. My theory is that Andy thought he would still have fun on the set without Don. Of course he would miss Don, because I'm sure they both had a ton of fun hanging out together between scenes. When Don left, I think he took the humor and the zip with him.

I think Andy wasn't having as much fun as before and that kind of carried on in front of the camera. It's weird thinking about all the moods the Andy character went through. Season 1 he was a fun loving hick. Season 2 through 5 he was just funny, he dropped the hick bit. Seasons 6 through 8 were the grouchy moods.

Can anybody name an episode of the later seasons when Andy wasn't scowling or biting somebodies head off?

I've noticed that about Andy as I've been watching the show quite a lot lately. But shoot, I'm going to keep my eye out for one show, at least, when Andy wasn't scowling or biting somebody's head off. You have to help though. lol. I'll tell you what, if I had to deal with the likes of Goober and Howard and Floyd and Aunt Bee on a daily basis, I'd run low on patience just like andy seemed to have done in those last years.

lol- You do have a point there. I don't think Aunt Bee bothered Andy all that much. I remember one scene (black and white episodes) where Andy yells at Aunt Bee. Aunt Bee and Opie have all this meat in this wagon. They were wheeling it down to the butcher because the freezer had tore up. Andy he yells something like, "Get the meat back in the freezer." He just keeps yelling that out. Oh man, that is a hilarious scene. lol
