I'll admit I was not around in the 1950s. But I wonder how realistic the men's haircuts were. Most of them seemed like 1970s, post-Beatles styles.

My only knowledge of haircuts is from photographs and movies from the 50's, as well as retro movies. Maybe guys got their hair cut before taking a picture or starring in a film.

For very much the most part men in the 1950's did not have shaggy hairstyles as the men on MASH do. Side burns sometimes but almost never a shag. Also, until the 60's men often used Brylcream to get their hair to behave as well as it often did in those days. MASH was very much a product of the 70's and early 80's when it was made. But the logic is that in a war zone hair styling is not all that big an issue.

I think this mismatched hairstyling thing may have been pretty widespread - I remember watching a Western film that was made in the 1960s - the men had Beatle hair and the women had long hair & looked just like Marianne Faithfull. :) :)
