Alex Trebek, the ultimate Game Show legend who's hosted "Jeopardy!" since 1984, has died at age 80, 20 months after announcing his Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer diagnosis on March 6, 2019, at his home in Los Angeles, California.

George Alexander "Alex" Trebek was born on July 22, 1940 in Sudbury, Canada, the elder of 2 children (including a younger sister, Barbara, who predeceased him in 2008, also of Cancer) born to French immigrant Lucille Lagasse and Ukrainian immigrant George Edward Trebek; after his parents divorce, Lucille gave Alex a younger half-brother, Michael, born in 1956, the product of an extramarital affair Lucille had as his parents were going through their Divorce.

After coming to America in 1973 from Canada, Alex made his U.S. game show debut with the short-lived "Wizard of Odds." This was followed by a number of OTHER short-lived shows e.g. "Double Dare" (NOT to be confused with the more popular Nickelodeon game show of the same name) before Alex was picked to succeed Art Fleming (who himself died of Pancreatic Cancer in 1995) as host of "Jeopardy!" in 1984--a job he maintained to the end, even as he battled Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer during his last 20 months.

On a personal note, not just before but moreso since the first revelation of his Pancreatic Cancer, I admired Alex Trebek for his transparent policy (as he first described his open-and-honest policy with his fans) throughout his Pancreatic Cancer battle, sharing with the world his ups, his downs, his highs, his lows, his successes and more throughout his brave battle with the disease.

Though "Jeopardy!" will not be the same without Alex, he continued to tape the series throughout his battle with Pancreatic Cancer even as recent as October 29. His final remaining "Jeopardy!" episodes will continue to air throughout Christmas Day, and will air Posthumously in his Memory.

As a life-long, devoted "Jeopardy!" fan since as long as I can remember, that is what I'm gonna miss about Alex Trebek most--not only the fact that he was very well at what he did over 36 1/2 seasons, but the fact that he, throughout the last 20 months, not once backed down against Pancreatic Cancer--much less to ANY other opponent in relative recent years e.g. a Torn Achilles Tendon and a Subdural Hematoma to name other health challenges besides Pancreatic Cancer.

And for that, like many other of my fellow Americans, I'm gonna miss you, Alex. Thank you for your banter, your master, and most importantly, throughout your 80 years on Earth, your Truth. I praise God that you and I will meet in Heaven on the other side.

Until then, if you want somebody to be your friend, you've got to be a friend to them.

Thank you, and Good Night.

Jeopardy! has more than enough episodes in the vault that they should just air repeats of Alex Trebek's former seasons through September 2021, the retro weeks this summer were fun. Ken Jennings is the logical choice to replace him, but between ABC's version of The Chase and Master Minds will he have time? To keep it in the family, they could make Alex's wife or one of his children the replacement host. Celebrities who I think could make good hosts: Tom Hanks or Kelsey Grammer.

As I stated on an earlier post (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showpost.php?p=5689467&postcount=56), I was thinking I'd see Alex Trebek be the host of Jeopardy! (and Johnny Gilbert as its announcer) through at least its 40th anniversary season, or at least for Mr. Trebek to fulfill the last two years remaining on his current contract. Mr. Trebek's death from pancreatic cancer this morning proves why pancreatic cancer is the absolute worst cancer to die from, simply because people don't survive for very long after the initial diagnosis. It's a real shame that Mr. Trebek's death had to be in the midst of a global pandemic, given the circumstances of COVID-19. I suspect there'll be a big succession battle for the next host of Jeopardy! next year.

Believe me, if I had hosted Jeopardy!, I'd feel like the ruler of the world, too.:notworthy:notworthy:bash:

:rip: Alexander George Trebek, a person who I've always admired since my childhood.

My guess is that they already know who the new host is - they’ve had time to plan. I also wouldn’t be surprised if they air some “best of” episode in January, to put a little distance between Alex’s death and the new host. Or perhaps guest hosts. But I don’t believe they’ll go with reruns for the rest of the season; they don’t want people to break the habit. I also can’t see Ken Jennings getting the job. He’s not a professional broadcaster and I don’t think he has the screen presence/charisma to do it. My guess is that the new host won’t be a white guy and they’ll go for diversity instead.

In the game show world I believe there is a saying that says "when it comes to finding the perfect game show host a game show host doesn't always have to perfect at first but starts to show true grit to be likeable" and that can be said about Alex Trebek and when it came to game shows Alex really showed his talents really well and when Jeopardy made it's syndicated debut in 1984 with Alex Trebek as the host I can say that Jeopardy made him a Comeback Kid after being the host of High Rollers and Double Dare "not the Nickelodeon game show but another game show with this title" because after being a successful star in Canada with the show The Wizard Of Odds Alex thought he could be a star in America and with his two game shows that I mentioned earlier plus Jeopardy he really became a superstar. What amazes me about Alex is how he could manage to juggle hosting both Jeopardy and Classic Concentration at the same time and still have time for fun. Speaking of Jeopardy did you know that Alex had only missed one taping in the show's run? Because his pregnant wife was due to give birth to their son and Johnny Gilbert filled in for him as host in 1991. Now with the deaths of Tom Kennedy Regis Philbin heaven has welcomed another game show king but for Jeopardy fans who are fearful that the show may end as the show biz saying goes "The show must go on" and I believe that there will be a new star of Jeopardy and whoever they choose will really fill Alex's sneakers really good

I don't think they'd do that. I certainly hope not. Whether Ken Jennings gets it or not, they need someone with intellectual credibility. Bringing in a clown like Steve Harvey to 'black' the show up would be a disaster. Bringing in a woman just because she's a woman would also be a disaster.

As for who would replace Alex Trebek, i do agree with your choice of Anderson Cooper. There's also another name i would like to throw into the mix and it's Mo Rocca. He reports for CBS's Sunday Morning, is frequently head on the NPR quiz Wait Wait! Don't Tell Me and has also hosted the National Geography Bee.

I think most everyone agrees he was Jeopardy.

More so than Bob Barker was TPIR or Pat Sajak was Wheel of Fortune: Barker's Beauties and Vanna White contributed significantly to those shows. But Jeopardy doesn't have a co-host.

He put up a good fight. :crying: I think they'll most likely go with Ken Jennings as a replacement. Other than Alex Trebek, he's one of the first people the general public think of when Jeopardy is mentioned. Will it work? Who knows. Ken has a love for the game and good charisma. Sometimes that isn't enough though. Bennett Cerf was great on the panel of "What's my Line", but was awful on the episode he hosted. We'll see what happens. RIP Alex Trebek.

Someone I hadn't thought of as a potential replacement host: Jeopardy's executive producer Mike Richards. He introduced tonight's episode with the news of Alex Trebek's death and they would still be airing the final 35 episodes he taped. Mike has previous game show hosting experience with GSN's revival of The Pyramid, and he is young enough to be around for a long time still. While not on the level of Dick Clark or Alex Trebek, very few people are, and Mike Richards was a much better Pyramid host than Michael Strahan, who has ruined that franchise and made it so trashy.

I'm still in shock I guess. Goodbye Alex, you will be missed. Goodbye Jeopardy. Once all of the new episodes that Alex hosted have been shown I'm done, I won't watch Jeopardy without him as the host. They can get a new host or cancel it I don't care. As far as I'm concerned Alex Trebek is irreplaceable, he was a good and dignified man with a great sense of humor. I especially don't want Ken Jennings as a new host because I can't stand him! But like I said it doesn't really matter because I won't watch Jeopardy again anyways.

Jeopardy! resumes filming next week with "interim guest hosts," starting with Ken Jennings (https://uproxx.com/sports/jeopardy-ken-jennings-guest-host-alex-trebek-death/)

The hit syndicated game show has revealed its first plans in the wake of Alex Trebek's death on Nov. 8. "We will resume production on 11/30 with a series of interim guest hosts from the Jeopardy! family – starting with Ken Jennings," the Jeopardy! Twitter account tweeted (https://twitter.com/Jeopardy/status/1330996342865293313) this afternoon. "Additional guest hosts to be announced." Jeopardy! last taped episodes with Trebek on Oct. 29. The announcement was accompanied by a statement from executive producer Mike Richards, who emphasized that Trebek wanted Jeopardy! to continue without him. “Alex believed in the importance of Jeopardy! and always said that he wanted the show to go on after him,” Richards said in the statement. “We will honor Alex’s legacy by continuing to produce the game he loved with smart contestants and challenging clues. By bringing in familiar guest hosts for the foreseeable future, our goal is to create a sense of community and continuity for our viewers.”

The bringing in guest hosts "for the foreseeable future" is the smartest thing they can possibly do. That way they will see who can actually do it and clicks with the viewers, instead of guessing who might be able to do it.

Alex Trebek Wardrobe Donated to Homeless Organization for Job Interviews
by Greg Evans
Feb. 9, 2021

Fourteen suits, 58 dress shirts, 300 neckties and various other items of clothing that once belonged to "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek have been donated by the show and the Trebek family to The Doe Fund, an organization that provides paid work, housing, vocational training, continuing education, and comprehensive social services to underserved Americans with histories of addiction, homelessness, and incarceration.

At the suggestion of Trebek’s son Matthew Trebek, a supporter of The Doe Fund, the clothing will be distributed to those participating in the organization’s “Ready, Willing and Able” reentry program to be worn on job interviews.

“During his last day on set, Alex extolled the virtues of everyone opening up their hands and their hearts to those who are suffering,” said Mike Richards, Executive Producer, "Jeopardy!". “Donating his wardrobe to those who are working to rebuild their lives is the perfect way to begin to honor that last request.”

Have you heard he's been criticized for being an awful host?

I wouldn't say he's that bad but he's not as good as Trebek. He does look like a total dork though.
