Mary McDonnell is turning 66 today. After attending SUNY-Fredonia, she began working with the Long Wharf Theatre in Connecticut, a prestigious regional theater, and also did quite a bit of Off-Broadway work; she received an Obie Award for her performance in Emily Mann’s Still Life. She made her Broadway debut in 1986 in the original cast of Mann’s Execution of Justice. Her first prominent film role was in John Sayles’s 1987 drama Matewan. In the 1990s she had prominent roles in films like Grand Canyon, Sneakers, and Independence Day, and received two Oscar nominations, for Best Supporting Actress as Stands with a Fist in Dances With Wolves, and for Best Actress in Sayles’s Passion Fish.

Like Ann-Margret, McDonnell has focused more on television as her career has progressed. She received an Emmy nomination in 2002 for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama for an appearance on ER, and then starred as President Laura Roslin on the reboot of Battlestar Galactica. She received a second Outstanding Guest Actress nomination for an appearance as Captain Sharon Rayder on The Closer. Her character became a regular role for the series’ seventh and final season, and McDonnell then starred as Rayder on the continuation spinoff Major Crimes, which finished its final season earlier this year.
