Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore 2 Scores Record-Breaking Opening Weekend on Netflix
by Justin Kroll
July 29, 2025

It’s been nearly three decades since Adam Sandler introduced us to Happy Gilmore, and audiences showed how much the Sandman and his beloved character still resonate following the record-breaking opening weekend of Happy Gilmore 2.

According to the Netflix Top 10 released Tuesday, the film amassed 46.7 million views in its first three days, making it not just best opening ever for an Adam Sandler Netflix film but also the biggest U.S. opening weekend for a Netflix film period.

The original 1996 film came in at No. 3 on this week’s chart with 11.4 million views.

Happy Gilmore 2, which bowed on the streamer Friday, also made an impact on the social media front, trending all weekend on X with engagement propelled by celebrity support that included Sandler, Travis Kelce, golf stars Rory Mcllroy and Scottie Scheffler, Post Malone and Guy Fieri.

It also benefited from the rare social media support of Taylor Swift, who gave a shout-out to the film (which features her boyfriend Kelce) on Instagram Stories.

I have no idea why they decided to make Happy Gilmore 2 but my mom got to see it and she thought it started out good at the beginning but got unappealing at the end. And I cannot believe how much movie tie-ins this Happy Gilmore sequel got. Like Subway has launched the Happy Gilmore Meal and what I think they planned to do with Happy Gilmore once the sequel came out was make a trilogy of Happy Gilmore movies. I wouldn't be surprised if Happy Gilmore 3 goes into development in the future. But I liked Happy Gilmore and I can say that the only reason Happy Gilmore 2 was made was because people thought Happy Gilmore was a successful comedy for Adam Sandler and so I think they want to make more Happy Gilmore movies or perhaps a Happy Gilmore sitcom will be made in the near future
