Holy Moses, is it time to go back to school already? I thought summer just started.

Calendar wise it did just start a smidge over 30 days ago.

I was being slightly facetious with that remark. For me back to school was always late August, but maybe some schools go back earlier these days. If I were a kid, I certainly wouldn't be ready to start thinking about it yet!

We had from Memorial day to labor day to be free. None of this going back in august crap.

We kids ran the show, and the adults toed the line.

Many kids around here started back to school yesterday or today. It's ridiculous.

A few years ago many parents complained when school started in August. The schools responded by starting in July.

The tradition of having no school in summer started in agrarian societies when children were needed on the farm to bring the crops in. Also I suppose in the days before air conditioning it was simply too hot to study. I guess the reasoning is those things no longer apply nowadays so why have a long summer break? If I were a kid today I'd actually be open to the idea of having continuous school with short breaks throughout the year. It always felt disorienting going back to school "in the fall" after a long break. Trying to adjust back to the school routine was murder.

It really limits when parents can schedule vacations, and some fun things like many state fairs happen in August. Summer is nowhere near over yet.
