Actor Robert Culp, best known for his role as an international tennis star and globe-trotting secret agent in the hit 1960s television series "I Spy," died Wednesday morning after a fall at his Hollywood home, authorities said.

The 79-year-old actor was rushed to Queen of Angels hospital shortly after 11 a.m. after hitting his head while taking a walk outside his home in the 1800 block of El Cerrito Place, said LAPD Lt. Bob Binder. He was found by a jogger who called 911, and paramedics, patrol officers and detectives responded to the scene.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later. A preliminary investigation found "that his death is accidental and there appears to be no sign of foul play," Binder said. An autopsy by the Los Angeles County Coroner's office is pending.

Culp broke into Hollywood in the late 1950s but catapulted to fame playing Kelly Robinson in the hourlong 1965-68 espionage series "I Spy," which was shot in exotic locales around the world.

Besides its popularity, the show also broke the color barrier for dramatic television series as the first noncomedy series to star an African American actor, Bill Cosby.

Off screen, Culp has been active in civic causes, most recently in his efforts to oppose construction of an elephant exhibit at the Los Angeles Zoo.

In 2007, the actor joined with real estate agent Aaron Leider in filing a lawsuit against zoo director John Lewis and the city to stop construction of a $42-million elephant exhibit and bar the zoo from keeping elephants there, accusing authorities at the facility of withholding medical care from the animals and keeping them cramped in small places.
Last year, after temporarily halting construction on the elephant exhibit amid a fierce debate, the city council voted to go ahead with the project as planned.

Wow this is so sad. I always watched him on the Greatest American Hero...one of my favorite shows. He died the same way my neighbor died. He fell while taking a walk. You just never know how much time you have. R.I.P. Robert. :(

I'm so very sorry to hear this news. As you can tell from my current avatar, I was a big fan of Greatest American Hero. I was also lucky enough to get an autograph (through the mail) of Mr. Culp. I saw him on one episode of Bill Maher's old Politically Incorrect and he seemed like a very thoughtful, intelligent and surprisingly soft spoken man.

Same here, and that's why I wrote him for an autograph back in 2005. Very sad news.

Rest in Peace Robert.

I know Bill Cosby will be quite upset over this too. He and Robert stayed good friends after I Spy and I remember at least one ep where Bill had him on The Cosby Show as a father with a daughter in trouble with drugs. It was a good episode where Cliff and Claire ended up just thankful that their kids hadn't ended up on drugs and that it could happen to any type of family.

He was a good actor, great looking to the end and now I know a good animal lover. Just an all-round good guy. The world will miss him.

Bill Cosby has commented:

Bill Cosby: Robert Culp like an older brother
3/24/2010, 8:59 p.m. EDT
The Associated Press

(AP) — LOS ANGELES - Bill Cosby says the late Robert Culp was like an older brother to him.

Culp, who starred with Cosby in the racially groundbreaking TV series "I Spy," died today after collapsing outside his Hollywood home. He was 79.

Cosby says the first born in every family dreams of having an older brother or sister, "to protect, to be the buffer, provide the wisdom, shoulder the blows and make things right." He says Culp was the answer to his dreams.

Cosby says that no matter how many mistakes he made on the series, Culp was always there to teach and protect him.

Police say Culp apparently fell and struck his head. Culp's manager says the actor's son was told he died of a heart attack.

Robert Culp wasn't in that episode. The episode he was in was "Bald and Beautiful." Robert played an old friend who had had a heart attack and quadruple bypass. I liked him in Everybody Love Raymond. I always thought for an older man he was really handsome. :rip:
