I finally saw the final episode of this show, but it was just an ordinary one for me. It mainly concerned Steve’s boss and his wife being concerned about their teenage son, who seems to be on a rebellious streak. I don’t know why they even used this as the title, since it was Ernie just reassuring them their son would be okay. Maybe they should have titled it “Whatever Happened to Ernie’s Acquaintance?”
I guess they didn’t realize the show wouldn’t be renewed for the following season. Otherwise, they could have done a more satisfying finale. Perhaps show Ernie graduating from high school since he was a senior in the final season. And they could have had the entire cast show up for the graduation. Mike and Sally could have dropped by, and Robbie might have gotten back from Peru to reunite with Katie and the triplets. Certainly a missed opportunity for sure.

An in-character reunion in the early 1980s was a M OP too = Dodie's prom upcoming as a subplot. Though Dawn Lyn in late seventies hanging around hairdo and a 1980-81 era prom dress that the wardrobe department likely will have acquired with what was in the loose change jar?

Interestingly enough, Tim Considine did appear in a short lived Don Fedderson show called The Smith Family in 1971 with long straight hair and a mustache. I'm guessing by that point Fedderson and Considine had reconciled their previous differences so having him return for a graudation episode for Ernie was entirely plausible if only Don Grady hadn't been so insistent on never returning even for one episode....

It was an entirely ordinary season 12 episode.
A graduation episode would have been a good idea, since they hadn't done one.

"It was an entirely ordinary season 12 episode."
They didn't know that they were not coming back.
