View Full Version : Penny coins will no longer be minted after this year

GoldenTV

Penny coins might be gradually going away. Treasury Department announced that it will end the production of new pennies starting next year as the coin cost more to make (3.69 cents) than its face value (one cent). It will not effect electronic money transactions, but I am guessing for cash transactions, the businesses have to start rounding out cents to the nearest Nickel.

There have to be billions of pennies around from all the decades they were made. Probably won't run out any time soon.

They first said they were gonna stop pennies in 1999 and luckily they did not......

Its stupid to get rid of them.........

That is true. But eventually it will happen as large percentage of them don’t remain in circulation as they are probably stashed in penny jars or junk drawers at home. Or if they fall on the ground people don’t even bother to pick them up, so they end up in the trash. Not to mentioned no more new pennies from the banks :)

I say good riddance. Have you ever stand behind a customer at the counter-or a person trying to get on the bus, and it take them forever to count their pennies to pay :D

I remember as a kid back in the 80s, they were talking about this very thing, and rounding everything off to a nickel, because even in the 80s it was rare that anything cost under a nickle

It's possible that a future President could tell the Treasury to mint them again.

Well just give it either 1, 3 or 5 more years of Pennies being minted if necessary

What I think will happen is, the penny will still be used. It just no more will be made. We still can use them for purchases but most people generally only get them back in change. So the banks will still save them to give to businesses. I will be able to close my Whitman penny holder with the Lincoln penny after this year. Business will still have items listed as $5.99 etc. A whole new change will happen when the prices will go to $6.00 but when that will happen is in the future.

I like pennies. I don't have a very good reason but I just think it's a cool concept. Maybe they could just mint 10% of what they normally mint per year. I don't think the demand is that high but it'd be nice to keep having new ones for the sake of tradition and nostalgia.

Plus then we’d have to have a poster named Nickel Lane, and I don’t think I could handle that.

I agree ! I'm kind of sad to see them go.:( I love the pretty , shiny copper color of new pennies .

I have several large old coffee cans filled with pennies . I think lots of people have " A penny saved is a penny earned" , so even if they aren't made anymore , I'm sure they will still be able to stay in circulation for a while. I hope !

I also have a jar full of coins-minus penny coins which I tend to throw away when emptying my pockets. So I already have moved from the old phrase "Pinching Pennies" to the new phrase "Pinching Nickels" :D

I roll up my pennies, nickels and dimes and take them to the bank at the end/beginning of the year. I use my quarters for small purchases or I bring them to small businesses near me who always need them.

I have $36 in pennies, nickels and dimes now.

My father gave me this a long time ago... this collection features the steel penny.

There was a copper shortage during WWII so they temporarily minted steel pennies.

Since practically all vending machines don't accept pennies anyway, they could have been produced in plastic for recent years. It would have made sense, though banks likely would not have liked the eventual mixing of plastic coins with older metal ones. And of course Coinstar machines would reject them.

Does anyone have the 2009 Lincoln's 200th Birthday pennies? I'm missing the "Professional Life" one

- Birth & Early Childhood (Kentucky): A log cabin, marking his 1809 birth.

- Formative Years (Indiana): Young Lincoln reading during a break from rail-splitting.

- Professional Life (Illinois): Lincoln as a lawyer/legislator before the Illinois State Capitol.

- Presidency (Washington, D.C.): An unfinished U.S. Capitol Dome, symbolizing his time in office.

What surprises me is, in 2026 a new set of Quarters are coming, a new dime and a new nickel. All are to be for the year celebrating the 250 years anniversary of the country. The mint tells us it cost too much to make a penny but how much is it costing to have new designs on coins. IT seems the last 30yrs the Quarter and the nickel have gone though changes. Up to about year 1995 or so we had one look of each coin with a P +D for mint locations.

I recently went to one of my local banks to bring in my rolled coins for dollar bills. I usually do this at the start of every year with pennies, nickels and dimes (I keep the quarters), but I didn't exchange my pennies this time.

I spoke to the teller and he told me that since pennies are no longer being made that they no longer give them out. They'll take them from clients, but no longer give out rolls of pennies to people/businesses.

He told me to hang on to whatever pennies you can as they may be worth something "down the road".

Dude111

I would think stores would encourage you to pay in pennies. Not more than 10-15 at a time for I wouldn't want to get behind someone who had a bag and wait for the cashier to count. The store could get a load this way. As for banks I would think the pennies would recycle. ONe store may have far too many, another store may have far too little. I certainly would feel gyped to pay either too much or lose a few cents in a transaction if the transaction is jumped the nearest nickel.

A local supermarket had this sign in front of the self checkout machines.

I went to buy some shaving cream, which cost $2.71, so I put $3.00 in the machine.

I got back $0.35 when it was supposed to be $0.29 as the machine said my change would be rounded. I see stores losing money if this continues as it will add up.

Dude111
02-20-2026, 10:16 PM

JamesG

I found this sign at another local supermarket where they say they will buy your pennies. I asked them about it and the manager said they will give $0.50 for every $0.50 roll.

So you would get back $4.00 for $2.00 in pennies.

biffbronson
03-25-2026, 01:29 PM
That's very odd that you got back 35 cents from the machine last month; $0.30 would have made much more sense (rounded up from $0.29)...

The symbol is the last letter of the Greek alphabet representing "the end" or "final chapter".

I've heard that Omega on the penny has a spying chip behind it. And that penny was minted in 2025 so it's got to be bad.

Keep this under your tinfoil hat, but if you file down the Omega letter, the penny won't track you. Filing it down removes its electrical resistance value.
