I'm pretty sure they were childhood friends ? I think Shirley was from / born in Millwaukee and Laverne and her Dad moved there from Brooklyn when Laverne was a kid. I guess they met in school or in the neighborhood. It would have been cool to have a flashback episode. Little girl actresses playing them on how they met. :)
