Son of the Beach (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Son_of_the_Beach) is an American sitcom (https://web.archive.org/web/20061031145936/http://www.jumptheshark.com/s/sonofthebeach.htm) that aired from March 14, 2000, to October 1, 2002, on FX. The series is a spoof of Baywatch, with much of the comedy based on sexual double entendres, puns, innuendo and the like. A major running gag portrayed the handsome David Hasselhoff character as a balding, middle-aged, pot-bellied and out-of-shape man who is nonetheless seen by all the other characters as highly fit and attractive. Radio talk show host Howard Stern was one of the executive producers. It wasn't just the sexual innuendo (https://old.post-gazette.com/tv/20000314owen1.asp) in some of the names and jokes (https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/anybody-watch-son-of-the-beach-on-fx-on-now-pst.847259/). There was also a parody (https://alchetron.com/Son-of-the-Beach) of Stephen Hawking, ethnic (https://www.amazon.com/Son-Beach-Vol-Dvd-03/dp/B00008AOTD) stereotypes, and stereotypes of gay people (particularly the mayor's son). And even if it was intended to be a parody (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0235137/reviews) of Baywatch, it's pretty safe to say that by the time that Son of the Beach arrived, Baywatch was already pretty much already a joke. |
