Once Suzanne left, Ritter sort of became the difficult one with being jealous of Don Knotts and preventing him from being funnier than him. This video did not even explain how ABC executives hid the secret immediate spin off from the rest of the cast.
I think the wild success of the show fueled much of this. Success went to everyone's head. Cocaine fueled Robin William's stand up routine and his antics. When you watch John Ritter and his insanely good slap shtick makes you wonder how much of it was drug fueled too.
Those first 3 seasons were incredible.
