Question: Why hasn't the complete Knots Landing tv series been released on DVD? (https://www.quora.com/Why-hasnt-the-complete-Knots-Landing-tv-series-been-released-on-DVD/answer/Jon-Mixon-1)
The primary reasons are:
The music rights were negotiated poorly - Knots Landing contained a lot of songs which could be used for its initial airing and repeats on network television and in syndication. However they were not negotiated for VHS/DVD, nor streaming (until recently) and so the series has disappeared from view.
It didn’t do well in syndication - Like Dallas, its progenitor, Knots Landing was a poor seller in syndication markets here in North America. That led its rights owners to decide not to risk the costs of making the series available on DVD.
The show produced no major stars - With the possible exception of Alec Baldwin, the series produced no major stars to make it attractive to new viewers. Despite running for 14 SEASONS (which was record until the NCIS/Law & Order/Supernatural narrative universes overtook it) the series did not produce a single performer whose success in Hollywood would have made his or her fans go back look up the series as a revival.
