Sovereignty outdueled Journalism down the stretch on a muddy track to capture the 151st Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs.

Sovereignty, ridden by Junio Alvarado, and Journalism, with Umberto Rispoli up, were neck and neck in the final furlong before Sovereignty pull ahead and grabbed the win for trainer Bill Mott.

Journalism closed as the 7-2 wagering favorite in the field of 19 3-year-olds.

Rain fell on and off throughout the day in the first Derby run on a sloppy track since 2019, when Country House won via disqualification.

Grande, trained by Todd Pletcher, and the Bob Baffert-trained Rodriguez were each scratched in the days leading up to the Derby due to a bruised foot.

My mom and I got to see the Kentucky Derby yesterday and I was amazed that Sovereignty held on and I thought Journalism was gonna win but it was Sovereignty all along. I also liked Owen Almighty because Owen is one of my favorite male names and I thought he was gonna win too. I think Sovereignty will pass on his talents to his first foals because I think Sovereignty truly has talent as a racehorse. I started liking the Kentucky Derby since I read horse books and think it's so exciting to watch

I always look forward to watching the Derby every year. I never pick the winner, but it's exciting to watch.
