Back in the early '90s there was an animated show that bounced around TV called Pirates of Dark Water. Ambitious in its execution and cost, it attempted to tell a continuous story.

But Pirates of Dark Water, like so many shows, just never caught on and didn't generate numbers enough to warrant the cost.

Join me as we discuss this classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon from 1991!

The Pirates of Dark Water was a short-lived animated project that was one of the most ambitious and expensive attempts at elevating cartoons.

Mer is an extraterrestrial world plagued by evil. The only thing that can stop the encroaching darkness and the ruthless pirate lord who seeks to control it is a motley crew of unlikely heroes - an orphan prince of a formerly powerful kingdom, the last of his line of ancestors; a seasoned pirate whose obsession with treasure hid a heart of gold; a mysterious eco-mancer with ties to a realm beyond mortal men's reach; and a strange creature called a monkey bird is. These were The Pirates of Dark Water, introduced by the famous cartoon company Hanna-Barbera and developed in 1991.

The Pirates Of Dark Water was actually based on a toyline of the same name and was also a sequel to a cartoon called Gibraltar And The Golden Lance and was originally part of The Funtastic World Of Hanna-Barbera. But I think why The Pirates Of Dark Water failed was because the toyline of the same name sold poorly and I think if it would've been promoted more there would've been a live-action movie made of The Pirates Of Dark Water. Because the way I see it The Pirates Of Dark Water failed because it's essentially a ripoff of the Thor and Loki stories but with pirates and when you put a pirates based cartoon it has to have action and adventure. But the only saving grace was that it featured some celebrity voice talent like Hector Elizondo and Jodi Benson. But had it been a monster hit Pirates Of Dark Water would've been more successful in my eyes
