In this video I will discuss the Attitude Era's older brother - The Cubicle Rebellion (https://filmschoolrejects.com/1999-movies-all-the-same/). A string of movies (https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1bbfajh/1999_had_5_major_films_that_had_a_bored_american/) released in 1999 (https://www.wunc.org/2024-04-28/why-1999-was-such-a-big-year-for-movies) that all dealt with (https://www.columbiatribune.com/story/entertainment/2019/10/09/party-like-it-s-1999/2573660007/) an office worker (https://www.openculture.com/2019/07/why-1999-was-the-year-of-dystopian-office-movies.html) growing tired of his milquetoast life (https://collider.com/90s-movies-jobs-lessons/), and staging a dramatic coup against societal norms (https://www.appetitefordeconstruction.com/p/the-class-of-1999-office-space). Those films being (http://www.unemployednegativity.com/2018/02/work-like-it-is-1999-year-of-refusal-of.html) - The Matrix (https://www.nysun.com/article/25-years-later-the-matrix-has-changed-the-culture-for-the-worst), American Beauty (https://www.gq.com/story/canon-fodder-american-beauty-oscars-review), Fight Club (https://www.brightwalldarkroom.com/2024/04/29/fight-club-1999/), Being John Malkovich (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sI3Obe0tiDU), and Office Space (https://medium.com/cinenation-show/why-fight-club-and-office-space-are-the-exact-same-movie-e151d6c1b9cf).

To be clear, this idea has been around for awhile. It's been discussed online for years, and was popularized in a video by the channel "Now You See It" where he dubbed the set as "Cubicle Movies" (https://nofilmschool.com/soul-crushing-boredom-cubicle-movies). A fitting name. A number of people have made great videos on this topic. But since I love all of these movies, and have some different thoughts on the matter, I decided to throw my take into the fray.

While I was just a child in '99 (https://macrohive.com/hive-refreshers/1999-the-best-movie-year-ever/), the cubicle rebellion is certainly a topic I can relate to. However, the world outside of the cubicle has changed drastically since (https://ew.com/article/2014/10/10/geekly-movies-1999/?srsltid=AfmBOorSuFLyv5oHG4xo-KxVWyFwylKPFcDszuGtMmN9aFZUpEukZSHW) 1999 (https://www.vox.com/culture/2019/1/3/18157860/1999-top-movies-box-office-fight-club-american-beauty-toy-story). These films are a fascinating snapshot (https://newsletter.allthefanfare.com/p/1999-when-gen-x-disillusionment-had) of the problems people had (https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/143fbxk/comment/jn9gp90/) in a relatively peaceful and prosperous era (https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1bbfajh/comment/ku8rhor/). I hope you'll join me as I look at what these films each had to say.
