That must be from the episode where ‘Thelma’ and ‘Larry’ broke up because I see Carl Franklin who played ‘Larry’ on the left and Debi Morgan who played ‘Samantha’ on the right of Esther Rolle. They both were on that episode!

Esther took her role extremely seriously. I understand her sensitivity in not wanting a black family to look dumb. However this was a comedy show and lines were put in for laughs not just because she was black. Her and John Amos were perfect for their roles and were a terrific TV mom and dad. I think they were a tad over sensitive in some aspects. There are many scenes and situations in this sitcom that were purposely written to make white people look dumb and very naive. However it was done for comedy sake. This show was not a drama and Esther got her own show from her quick wit against a wealthy white liberal Maude. Jimmy Walker was not an actor. He was a comedian. Esther did improve the show. The actress that played Thelma complained to Esther that her role was diminished to just saying good morning mom, good morning dad, shut up JJ in the first season. Esther went to the writers and producers immediately to make sure her daughter was given a real script and to have a real life.
