Just looking from 1973-1982 half hour episodes. Not including Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour.

Two MASH-ers to start: Gary Burghoff and Loretta Swit

Jamie Farr?

I cannot ever recall Farr being on the 70s Match Game.

It would be interesting to go back to the 60s version. Although not a panelist, Dick DeBartolo, who made some tweaks to the 60s version to add humor in the questions and to keep the 60s MG from being the proto-Family Feud, is still with us.

Also from the 60s version still with us as of 04/13/2025:

Rita Moreno (I think returned to the show 1979 or 80)
E.J. Peaker
Shani Wallis

Just from memory….and had to check Wiki to verify still being with us….dunno any male celebs from that version still with us, just DeBartolo.

I KNOW there’s a site that listed celebs from the 60s version—maybe gathered from TV Guides then. I will try to look for more.

WOW—if this is the definitive site, I found about 20 more celebrities from the 60s Match Game, still with us as of 04/13/2025.

https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0055688/fullcredits/

I won’t list them all, but two quite famous males stand out: Paul Anka &’Bobby Vinton.

I remember that the original MG loved athletes, and Sandy Koufax & Carl Yastrzemski are among the celebs.

Others include:

June Lockhart (at 99)
Michele Lee
Nancy Sinatra
Bill Cosby
William Shatner
Leslie Uggams
Brenda Vaccaro
Barbara Feldon
Carol Lawrence
Dionne Warwick
Shirley Jones

….and a few that I didn’t bother to look up if they were still alive….wow!

Jamie Farr was just a guess since he appeared on other game shows.

I've read that only a few of the 60s version exist, and only one from after it went to color in 1963.

There are 11 shows from the 60s making the rounds, and the 1969 Peggy Cass/Tony Randall ep is only at the Paley Center.

Sure it wasn’t as LOL funny as the 70s version—but I enjoyed the scoring system, especially as the score was on a scrolling wheel. I had always wondered “how high” that scoring wheel went—only DeBartolo could tell me!

A couple of 1964 shows should be on YT, to give an idea of the score wheel.

One 1965 ep on YT is audio only, and chock full of baseball stars.

I was thinking this thread would be about the most famous version of the show (you know, the one Buzzr tends to beat to death) but yeah, that’s more people still around from the ‘60s version than I would have guessed.

Yes and I apologize for derailing the thread.

The 60s version wasn’t really known for having “regulars” as such.

No, it’s fine. Title does say “Gene Rayburn hosted Match Game”. The ‘60s version is a Gene Rayburn hosted Match Game. So no derailing problems.

^ Sorry, but although Carol is still with us, she never appeared on MG as a panelist. Vicki Lawrence, indeed; Carol, no, unless it was the 60s version, and I didn’t see her name.

Carol was a superstar during the 70s run, and woulda commanded a king’s ransom to be a panelist! It’s possible, and come to think of it, I think she DID do a surprise visit to the MG set which was right near her studio—but not as a panelist. Can somebody verify that? It might be on YouTube. I know that Burt Reynolds popped up the same way in the 70s run (he WAS a celeb on the 60s version).

Hollywood Squares with Peter Marshall always seemed to get the bigger stars, and MG the remains! I’m sure that the budget for Squares was astronomical compared to MG.

Oh my! YES I remember this—technically this doesn’t count, although Carol and the cast played along!

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rkYIDWGPFy8

There was a time on 70s MG & I remember this. The Super Match had this to fill in:

BESS ______

There was Truman and Myerson, but the $100 response was Bess Armstrong. Everyone on stage was puzzled—Who’s Bess Armstrong? One of the celebs said something like “An actress, NOT very well known…..”

To that, Charles Nelson Reilly said, “You mean the kind that would be on THIS panel?” That was a riot.

I know, right? Even though the heavy hitters--Brett, Charles, Richard, Betty, Nipsey, Scoey, Patti Deutsch, Dick Martin, Patty Duke, Bob Barker, Mary Wickes, Bill Daily, Marcia Wallace, Ed Asner, George Kennedy, Mary Ann Mobley, Avery Schreiber, Ethel Merman, Bill Cullen, Louisa Moritz, Robert Donner, Eva Gabor, Dick Gautier, and Debralee Scott, to name only a few--are long gone, there are several panelists (Fannie Flagg, Jimmie Walker, Elaine Joyce, Bart Braverman, Dolly Martin, Joyce Bulifant, Fred Grandy, Lee Meriwether, Bill Anderson, Robert Walden, Susan Richardson, Gary Burghoff, and Rita Moreno) that are still alive and kicking.

Had Dolly Parton actually appeared as a panelist on Match Game during the zenith of its popularity, there would've been numerous wisecracks from the other panelists (and possibly from Gene himself) referring to Dolly's "assets."
