...instead of with each one's parents?
Why did the Duke cousins live with their uncle Jesse on The Dukes of Hazzard instead of with each one's parents? (https://www.quora.com/Why-did-the-Duke-cousins-live-with-their-uncle-Jesse-on-The-Dukes-of-Hazzard-instead-of-with-each-ones-parents/answer/Jon-Mixon-1)
Question: Why did the Duke cousins live with their uncle Jesse on The Dukes of Hazzard instead of with each one's parents?’
Multiple reasons, including:
The narrative required it - The Duke Boys were on probation and remaining in Hazzard and around Uncle Jesse’s farm were portion of that probation in the early days of the series
The narrative required it #2 - It would have been far more difficult to have all the characters combine if they didn’t live together, especially since they weren’t siblings and Jesse wasn’t a parent, so they simply wrote that they all lived together out on the farm.
Extra characters cost extra money - For each Duke cousin, they would have needed at least one parent and that’s an extra expenditure for what was a relatively low-budget series. Better that they were all apparently young adult orphans even as improbable as that would be,
Extra characters require stories - The Duke Boys negative interactions with Sheriff Rosco P. Coletrane and the county political leader/gangster “Boss Hogg” was the core focus of the series. As the series progressed minor characters like Enos, Cletus and Cooter got airtime and stories themselves; however a Duke parent (or parents) would have required stories earlier and as first two seasons demonstrated, there wasn’t a lot to go around.
Extra characters steal focus - The cast was already sizable and adding more people would have meant that the “stars” (Schneider and Wopat) would have received fewer lines and less airtime. Keep it simple and keep it smaller.
The show addressed the issue briefly several times, but it mostly left things “under-explained” as trying to make sense of it would have simply created more questions than answers.
