Mann returned to the idea of a feature film in 2004 while filming Collateral. After a successful collaboration with Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx, Mann offered them the lead roles in Miami Vice. Both actors agreed, quickly signed contracts, and started working with Mann on the script.
